Sent home ill on first day!

Help!

DD is 4 and started reception today. She has been at the preschool and had transition days, so knows some of the other children and staff. She went off happily, no signs of any issues at all - all good, I think.

Then school calls and says she been sick at lunch time! I've collected her and now she's at home. I'll keep her here for 48 hours - but as far as I can tell she is fine. Eating, drinking, playing, no more sickness or upset tummy. Currently on the trampoline!

I understand the 48 hour rule and that's fine. But I am SO SAD for her, and also worried: a) will this affect her settling in and b) will all the teachers and parents think I sent her in unwell because it's day one?! Will she and I get a reputation??

Worried and sad!!

It's 48 hours. She'll be fine. Don't worry.

No one, apart from you, will remember this by Christmas.

This won't affect her settling in, you get children starting in random months if they move house and become one of the class almost instantly. Plus children this young will still not know all the children's names and faces yet and won't even have had a chance to play with each child by day 3-4 so they may not even notice she wasn't there! With your DD if she was happy to go in today I'm sure she'll be delighted to go back in a couple of days just the same.
The teachers/parents won't think anything of it, sickness and bugs is huge in Reception! Sometimes wiping out half a class, so at least she is off and not passing it round everyone!

Oh no!

I’d be sad too as we build up first days so much, but as others say the kids will not notice things like missing a couple of days and I’m sure she’ll slot straight back in.

Like you, I’d be concerned the teachers thought I’d knowingly sent a child in ill but in a massive overthinker. If the teachers saw her this morning I’m sure they know that she was fine and I’m sure they’ll have seen tons of kids do the quick switch between ill and fine. There’s so many bugs going around at the moment that it can’t be helped anyway, and could even have been unrelated to illness anyway!

You're brave letting her on the trampoline after vomiting at school!

I was just thinking that, imagine having to scrape vomit off a trampoline surface with all the holes for it to get stuck in to 😳🤮

You are a braver woman than me OP!! Credit where credit is due.

But in all seriousness, she will be fine, she will be back in for Friday and all will be ok. Just think of it as she's getting a "gentle introduction to school".

Teachers will have also seen she was well this morning, no issues and just took a turn at lunch time.
