How to go about switching schools when in a different authority?

We have decided to move to a different town, we are going to wait until next July/August as DS is just about to go into Yr1 and DD is starting school next September so we figured the change would be easier next year, I just have no idea where to begin with how we would apply for school places? I need to apply for DD reception place by October this year, I'm assuming I apply for a school in my current town and then have to apply again next year when we have a property in our new town?

Following since we are in exactly the same position!

You apply through the LA where you live. You can apply for schools in the LA to which you are moving by naming those schools as preferences on the form you submit to your current LA, but you are unlikely to get a place at a popular school if they use distance as the tie breaker.

You would be better trying to move by the January deadline. Then its just one child doing an In Year admission.

@PuttingDownRoots is correct. The deadline for primary school applications is 15th January. If you can move before then, you will have a better chance of getting a Reception place at a school you want. Your son will be an in-year application regardless of when you move. As he will need a place in Y1 or Y2 (depending on when you move), you are likely to have a very limited choice of schools. It is likely that most will have 30 in each class so cannot admit your son due to the infant class size limit.
