Yr 2 sats - whats best?

We have booked to go to Florida in May 2023, but have been told its Year 2 Sats week. Looked in to changing but really expensive. We have found the 18th for 2 weeks is only £500 more.
my question is - is it better to miss sats and do them when he returns- or, miss the 2 weeks before when they are getting ready for them? Oh the dilemma! Any thoughts anyone?

Don’t go in term time at all snd value education a bit more? They won’t do sats in another week I think. I would not go in May. Why not Easter holidays? You do have 2 weeks available then.

Hi, I'm a Year 2 teacher.

The 'window' for Year 2 SATS is the whole of May...so, as long as your child is in school 'sometime' in May, and you've informed the school of your exact dates when they won't be in, the school will arrange to administer them. It's a right pain in the backside to do this mind you, as your child will have to be completely isolated from other children whilst they are taking the! I had several off during SATS week this year- some on holiday, like you, and we also had an outbreak of Covid (bound to happen 🤷‍♀️). Each child was completely isolated upon their return until all tests had been done.

With two children, who had actually been on holiday, we did not have enough staff for this on certain days (remember, there always has to be two members of staff when tests are administered!) so parents had to fetch them in JUST to sit a test, then collect them again and take them home. They did this until all the tests were done.

As I said, it CAN be done, but it's a logistical and staffing pain in the arse!

Your call OP. SATS are ALWAYS in May and are very well known...this cannot have been 'news' to you!

TizerorFizz · 29/07/2022 08:13

Can be done maybe but schools facilitating it with the half term holiday as well is a pain and they won’t.

Yellowmellow2 · 29/07/2022 10:13

As others have said, the tests can be done at any time in May but it will be a massive inconvenience for the school and will take two member of staff away from the other children. You shouldn’t be taking your child out of school for two weeks. It will certainly be unauthorised, and you may well be fined.

SpringIntoChaos · 29/07/2022 12:50

FYI there are 2 x Reading Papers, 2 x Maths Papers and 2 x SPAG papers.

6 tests, that will ALL require completing - and all will need to be done BEFORE your child is allowed to reintegrate with the rest of their year group. Each one will need 2 adults to supervise (for integrity). It’s a lot to ask of the school just so you can take a term time holiday! Really quite selfish of you!

I don’t really care much when parents take their children out for holidays…I get that cost is a factor. But not during what is a well documented exam period!

TizerorFizz · 29/07/2022 14:38

I don’t see why the op cannot go at Easter. As $/£ will soon be at parity, Florida won’t be cheap!

NerrSnerr · 29/07/2022 14:40

Book it in the holidays or accept that you can't afford Florida right now if it's too expensive.

Pinkflipflop85 · 29/07/2022 14:49

I have been teaching year 2 for many years and across different schools. Not once have I ever experienced children being isolated from others if they missed a test!

In our Borough we stagger the tests in small groups across May. A small group will go and do the tests then return back to the rest of the class.

KarrotKake · 29/07/2022 14:59

What happens to the cost If you move it to October?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 29/07/2022 15:01

They need to be done in May so if you do go with the 18th, he would need to do them before you fly.

When did this come to you? Ideally speaking to the Y2 teacher would be the best bet but they are off now.

Smileyduck · 31/07/2022 22:38

Not read whole post so someone else has probably mentioned that there are no Y2 sats next year, 2022 was the last year. That said, most schools will probably be doing something similar for internal assessment purposes but nothing that is statutory. Doesn't make considering a 2 week holiday during school term time acceptable though.

There are still ks1 sats next year. They become non statutory from September 2023.

Connie2468 · 31/07/2022 23:11

Honestly who cares about SATS though?

It's not like it will have any impact on your child.

Amammai · 31/07/2022 23:19

I honestly would not worry if my child missed their y2 SATs. I’m a y6 teacher! Y6 SATs a bit more important but really still only for the school.

I’m assuming this trip to Florida is a once in a life time kind of thing. No idea why PP are being so grumpy about you taking your child out in term time. It’s obviously going to be significantly cheaper.

If their overall attendance is otherwise good and you don’t take them out for a fortnight every year, it’s really unlikely to impact in the long run. Family holidays are so important. I’d just inform the school and leave them to sort out when is best for your child to sit the tests.

if I wasn’t teaching myself, I would absolutely take a child of that age out for a holiday like that. Go and have fun!

Sorry, clearly out of the loop. The government has backtracked on this. Even the TES thought this year was the last quite recently.

That's incorrect...it was originally going to be 2022 as the last year of SATS, but it's now 2023, due to the delay of the EYFS baseline being rolled out (Covid 🤷‍♀️) It has been confirmed by the DFE that SATS will go ahead next year.
