starting school late, year 1 , 2 or later

Has anyone kept their child at home until year 1 or later, because they didn't think the child was ready. If so, did it work out? Did they settle once they started? Did they seem to be left out of things until they started?

My DS was very young when he started in Reception as he's a July baby. Would have preferred to keep him home but he did do ok. The harsh reality is in a lot of areas if you don't start in Reception, there may be no places at your local primary.

They have to be in some sort of education by their 5th birthday so if you want to home ed then you need to make this formal with the council even if you're only doing it for a year or so.

You are under no obligation to notify the council or anyone if you decide to home-ed.

You can home educate if you want to until you choose otherwise. Just bear in mind that your child will go into an age appropriate class if you do decided to place him back in school eventually.

Thanks for those answers. I have registered my DS for Sept. so I imagine I would have to deregister if I decided to. I don't think my local school is over subscribed as it is a small village, so I'm hoping I could get him in later, but haven't checked so that's a good point. I also want to ask them about starting after Easter of Reception year, as DS not 5 till then. I know they allow part time in Reception so maybe they are quite flexible, but I need to find out.
