Reception reading read write inc

My child's school is really bad at communicating and swapping reading books we have the same one for months so I'm struggling to know what is expected of a reception child and where ds fits into this.

I know there will be a massive range at this age as some of the children so much older relative to their age than the youngest, but what is average for a reception child at this point? If your child is doing read write inc what colour books are they reading?

Any suggestions for things to do over the summer to keep him going so we don't backtrack during the holidays. Obviously I read to him.

In the summer between Reception and year 1 I would just encourage lots of drawing/colouring/painting type activities, writing cards, postcards etc if they will, and lots of reading together, not just books but street signs, labels, subtitles on TV.

They should be on green or purple by the end of the Reception.

I'd recommend doing a summer reading challenge at the local library. For pre-reading DC they can be read to and tell the librarian about the books, but I really found that it fostered a love of reading in mine, maybe because they saw that the librarians were really passionate about books

My reception child is on pink but I know he’s ahead with his reading ( not with the writing)
I have bought some other reading books for him to read over the summer hols. He’s already read the songbirds level one so I’ve got level 2 and I’ve picked up a few biff chip and kipper books in level one and two. So he can keep practicing over summer but not forge ahead
All the sound sets and ditties for read write inc can be printed for free. DS is just finishing set 2 sounds.

Interesting. Last 2 books brought home (at the same time) are pink the previous 3 lots (that's all we've had all year) were red.

Sylaby thanks going by that I think he is ok with comprehension and reading (reluctant with sound blending would rather guess) but definitely not meeting writing yet.

We'll continue reading around 5 times a week with them just because I think at this age when they've only just started to properly read, to then suddenly stop for weeks means they'll probably forget some of those skills when going back. We'll also do a summer scrapbook - drawing pictures, sticking in tickets of places we visit and encourage them to write a sentence / label the picture to keep up their writing practice too.

I'm assessing children as expected if they are on red or green (RWI says green but the red books are fine if going by the early learning goals).

Basically they should be able to read short sentences with some common exception words and at least 10 digraphs (these can include ff/ss etc).

For example: "The man went to the shop. He got a bag of sweets. He got a box of eggs."

That's just an example.

My daughter is on blue in this reading scheme, she is in reception.

I thought we were a bit pushed to get through grey level as well this term - is this not just a reception level reading scheme and they move to Oxford reading tree in year 1? I was worried we still had another level to do in the next 3-4 weeks before summer. Now I am confused about the expected standard as I assumed you had to get through entire RWI in reception

Fortyfortyforty · 19/06/2022 20:06

My dd finished RWI by the middle of spring term because she was on her way to reading before school thanks to copying her brother during lockdown!!! But quite a few of her class are on green or purple and just one or two have reached blue or grey. There are still a couple of kids in DS’ year 2 class who haven’t finished the scheme so I don’t think there’s a rush to finish it in reception or year 1 for that matter.

I'd say mine is probably Level 3 or 4 in Oxford Reading but they've not sent books home at all this year, so I wouldn't worry about a lack of new reading books for yours!

We're in Wales so have started on the new curriculum which seems to involve no structured learning, including not sending books home or doing any kind of structured writing.

@PurpleandOrange gosh no! RWI continues into Year 2. I would expect children at the beginning of Year 2 to be working on Blue/Grey.

The Oxford Reading Tree scheme doesn't continue after RWI. It is a totally different scheme. I would expect schools to be teaching either RWI and using all RWI resources, OR teaching using a different scheme and using Oxford Reading Tree (or whatever else they prefer).
