Has anyone ever organised a colour run?

We are small school and we are organising a colour run.

Different companies are advising differing amounts to buy. We are organising for 100 people as we are a small school.

Is there anything we should know? What's your experience?

What's a colour run?

(I was on the PTA at our school and organised various things so might be able to give guidance if i knew what you were doing.)

pompomseverywhere · 10/06/2022 19:48

A colour run is where people run around a course and powdered paint is thrown at them.

Ah. Ok. Not a clue! Good luck.

Bsmirched · 10/06/2022 19:54

It might be worth contacting local secondaries' art departments to see if they have any from days gone by. That's what we did, so we didn't have to buy any!

Like what happens during the Hindu festival of Holi?!?

That's a great idea

@Meredusoleil yes like that

I am tempted to ask But Why?
However I assume it's because people find it fun. Presumably not the people left clearing it all up!

Meredusoleil · 10/06/2022 20:00

Have you got any Hindu or Sikh children in your school? If so, I would speak to their parents or put a message out to all the parents and ask if any of them could either provide you with the powder or help you with running it.

Gr33ngr33ngr4ss · 10/06/2022 20:00

Yes - did one for Holi as part of a full day at school.
Check for allergies in all kids! Skin and breathing/dust
Repeat to parents to send OLD clothes.
Don't underestimate how much powder you'll need
It makes a fucking huge mess and ruins your shoes!

But made for fun and great photos. And a grumpy school cleaning team.

Bunnycat101 · 14/06/2022 07:57

Tbh I hate any event that is a ‘bring old clothes’ because we’ll trash them especially if shoes likely to get ruined. I’d check how keen parents would be before investing in the paint etc.

takeabrolly · 14/06/2022 08:06

Honestly I wouldn't do it. I know you'd get fab photos but... allergies, paint in their eyes, what happens at the end? They can't go into the school, can't get into a car, do they strip off outside and get changed? What if its raining? Who cleans up after?

carefullycourageous · 14/06/2022 08:19

This would annoy me as a parent, less if you did something meaningful for Holi but if you just want to make a mess as a generic colour run I'd be irritated.

Do something with water instead, a whole lot less mess.

That's a good point about getting home.

I’d be deeply unimpressed as a parent. Seriously?

Check out PTA Ideas and Advice Facebook group. Search the group for ideas. Parent Kind also have a "to do" list on how to organise one.

I do wonder if teachers just organise this stuff to deliberately piss parents off! There are a hundred fun things they could do that won't wreck clothes, mean they need a full bath after school and potentially bess up the car.

Poppins2016 · 14/06/2022 21:24

Going against the grain here, but I think it sounds like a fun idea. I'd be happy for my 3 year old to take part (either now or at hypothetical school age).

I've been to a couple of colour runs. The powder washed out of my running shoes and my white T shirt very easily. You could sell some plain white T-shirts that would look fantastic covered in colour powder but could also be re-worn after washing.

Getting home actually isn't that bad - once you've had a brush off and a short walk around there's not that much residue...

Littlebluebird123 · 14/06/2022 21:37

My kids school have done this as a fundraiser for a few years.
The kids absolutely loved it!
I'm not sure what paint they used but it all came out the clothes. Some minimal staining on my kids though. Lol.
Goggles were used to help with the paint in eyes.
Participation was optional but most did it.
Adults created an obstacle course and the children went though it as they threw or squirted paint at them. (They used super soaker type things and had buckets of extremely watered down paint -poster paint I think.)
They had a rota for classes and did it at the end of the day so children were messy for the least amount of time.
Those who were at after school club had clothes to change into.

Well for a start teachers don't organise it and secondly who would organise anything deliberately with malice? 🤷‍♀️

We are going ahead Saturday so I'll let you know how it goes.

Those who would be unimpressed snd pissed off won't be there so hopefully it'll be a good day for anyone who has bought a ticket.

Have fun. The kids will love it!

pompomseverywhere · 19/06/2022 06:00

It was bloody brilliant and everyone loved it. Never seen the kids of all ages so engaged at a pta event. It was freezing cold and raining so enjoyment was against the odds.

I'd definitely recommend this event.
