Tutor 7+ - how far in advance

Hello. Can anyone tell me how far in advance of 7+ it’s usual to tutor (if doing so - please no debate over the merits/not of doing so). I’m guessing one academic year but would love to hear if that’s ok. We are north London. Thanks.

7+?
Is that year 2 child or do you mean 11+ year 6 child?

Sailingovertheedge · 08/06/2022 14:33

The test taken for y3 intake. Not the 11+.

I only have experience of 11+ but i found 1 year was enough. Depends on the child and if they are struggling etc

We did the 7 plus, although we did not go the tutoring route, I would imagine little and often is good so start quite awhile before, now for Jan assessments, rather than a final blitz. I would say 7 plus is the hardest as the children don't know what they want from a school and are a bit too young to understand.

depends on what schools your opting for and standard expected. Also whether your DC is at a state or prep school.

I know parents who had a tutor from age 3 as well as sending to prep school. The schools they wanted expected DC to be two years ahead at 7+. Her son was reading books for ten yr olds when he was 6.

Thank you both. Dd in reception now. Very happy. Great reading. Guess I will wait until Christmas time maybe some work with her beforehand.

It really depends on what schools you are targeting and what your current school is like. The most academically selective schools will be expecting the pupils to be working 1-2 years ahead of the national curriculum by the time they take the 7+ exams in year2. If your child is at a school that accelerates the most able ahead of the curriculum then you can start later. If not, then you’d probably need to start earlier doing little and often to advance to the needed level.

Our tutor was v helpful in guiding when to start. Any formal tuition before Dec Year 1 she said was not going to help. This was for the most academic schools in London: Westminster, St Paul’s, Etc. Children are too young to cope with an hourlong stretch of work before Yr 1. Guided on things we could do ourselves before formal tuition. Little and often is way to go.

One of my friends uses a tutor for her son who is in reception (he just turned 5 in May, and she's been using them since December). They ensure he's on a good footing and got a solid foundation for learning further, and also it's an independent person my friend can speak to about any concerns at all to do with her son (health, wellbeing, potential bullying at the school, his eating habits etc). They do things like reading, basic maths, topic discussions (he's matured a lot since having the weekly sessions). Let me know if you want their details - I'll be using them for my daughter when she starts reception in September
