Cost for school run.

Our toddler attends pre-school, normally I did the school run in the morning, partner the school run home.

Due to extra work commitments, we need a childminder to do the morning drop off and pick up, partner works at home - ( essentially we need a taxi service but with a qualified childminder.)

Does anyone know how much this will cost us ( outer zones of London, about 15 mins drive door to door.

So you just want someone to pick up and drop off your child? Not care for them before and after school?
Does such a thing exist? I would suspect a childminder would want to charge you as though they are minding your child. Picking up your dc could affect their child:adult ratios and prevent them from taking on a proper paying child??

This is not something that a childminder usually offers.

JamMakingWannaBe · 16/05/2022 21:42

Does your school have a breakfast club? Would that help with your timings?

NerrSnerr · 16/05/2022 21:42

I can't imagine many childminders would want to do this because they wouldn't want to lug all the children they care for to do a nursery run, and due to ratios it'll mean they can't take another child on.

Maybe a nanny agency?

Amicompletelyinsane · 16/05/2022 21:44

It would block a space for a full day child for the childminder so I don't you'd find someone to do it.

We paid for something a bit like this a few years ago……£20. I don’t think you’d get anyone to do it for less. The person who did it was a temporary nanny who was also a student. She came to our house for 7am and took the kids to breakfast club 15 minutes away for 7.30 and then went on to her lectures. Then she picked them up again in the afternoon. Her normal hourly rate was £12.

Yes, this is exactly what we're looking for. Thank you for providing a ballpark figure.

Can you contact the council and see if they have a pick up service? Some will do this for a fee.

You could also look at female taxi companies, if you felt that would be better, you might find a local mum who does this with her own children in tow.

YerAWizardHarry · 16/05/2022 23:06

My son used to go to a childminder for an hour every morning and she’d drop him at school for £5 an hour

Thanks for the replies. We found out through the parents whatsapp a few options, its amazing actually how helpful some mums (and dads) have been offering to help.

That’s lovely but I’d be a bit wary of relying on favours from other parents if you need it to be happening every day, without fail.
If you’re not paying it’s very easy to get left in the lurch.
What happens when the other family is ill or just can’t be arsed?

This is where some parents at school have gone to find after school nannies - quite often students who earn a bit of extra money doing the school run.

Hi everyone,

So I have a situation,
I have a neighbour who´s daughter goes to the same crèche as my daughter she asked if I could help to take her with me I agreed. I thought it would be occasional help not everyday since September. I drop her off and collect her. I have been thinking to ask for payment. I don´t know how to ask and how much as I feel embarrassed to ask.
Please help

What time would your child be being picked up and dropped back to you? Will you still be working when they are at home with you after preschool? Personally I would find childcare that covers the time you need for work including getting to / from work / getting back home in time to log on.

Is there a childminder near the preschool that you could drop DC to in the morning before work (thinking 7.30/8am) then pick up again after work (5.30/6)? Or consider a nursery with longer hours?

Londonforestmum · 11/02/2024 18:47

It seems you think it's fine to have your child at home while you're working, but not fine to take time out of work to do drop off / pick up. I'd say neither is fine really!
