Transfer to welsh speaking school in year 1

Hi everyone. My son is in reception and is getting on very well with his reading and writing in English. However I am thinking of moving him to the Welsh speaking school as I would like .y younger son to start there too.

My worry is that he will find it very confusing starting in year 1 and it may be too late for him to catch up and learn the language? Has anyone got any experience with this? Thanks :)

My relative started Welsh medium in yr 7. Your child will be fine.

Do it. He'll probably pick it up very quickly and it is advantageous to be fluent in two languages.

DIL went to a welsh medium secondary as a new learner and is now completely fluent, and as she is doing a PhD now at a to uni it doesn't seem to have held her back

top uni, not to uni, and it's not in languages

It shouldn’t be an issue at all. It’s very common for children to join in Yr1 or 2 and they’re absolutely fine.

Thank you everyone that has made me feel a lot better in my decision !

How’s he doing?

Another thinking yes, do it! Bilingualism is a gift. And in Wales the foundation phase means y1 and y2 are less 'pushy' than in England so he can just be immersed in the language without the pressure of constant assessment.
