Breaside Prep vs Bromley High for Primary/Junior School

Mums,

Any insights on Breaside Prep vs Bromley High for Reception to Y6? My DD is due in Reception in Sept 2023. We have been to open days for both schools. I personally really liked Breaside for their approach and students seemed very confident but Bromley High is obviously much bigger and spread out with amazing infrastructure. Downside being its a through school so no prep for 11+.

But just in terms of the school, academic results, extra curriculars, pastoral and wraparound care - any thoughts, advice would be extremely helpful!

Also - waiting lists for Breaside seem very long for pre-prep and reception and wouldnt know about admissions until much closer to time. With Bromley its only reception start and completely assessment based.

I am probably getting ahead of myself here as I dont even know where and if in any we will get in but would be great to have any thoughts from current, past and prospective parents.

Many Thanks!

*Sorry, that should read my DD will more likely get into breaside, and DS will have a place at the state school due to sibling priority.

Im DS is also at Braeside (Prep prep) and older DD in an Ofsted 'outstanding' state school. She has recently taken the entry exam to Breaside and waiting for the results. We are torn between sending her there or keeping her in the state school. If she stays, we will transfer our DS over to the state school as well. Overall, the state school is great. They have an excellent SEN service and extracurricular after-school activities (for which you pay extra). We wanted to transfer our DD to breaside is that we want there to go to good grammar, and they are academically ahead of state school by 1 year, I believe. However, I love the state school as they care for the kids and the lovely teachers. My DS is very introverted and doesn't make friends easily, so I thought a smaller setting would be better for her....I am so confused - not sure what to do....

The private schools all claim they are a year ahead of state schools - they seriously are not, it is just a marketing claim. When your dcs get to senior school they will mix in with a load of state and private school kids and the state school ones certainly will not be a year behind the private school ones and the private school ones won't be a year ahead of the state school ones - it will be a mixed bag based on intelligence, tutoring and parental input. Seriously, if you are happy with the state school stick with it and save your money for when you need tutors (or a holiday) in the future.

@MsFogi Thank you for your comments. That's quite helpful. My heart is saying state school, and my husband agrees.... so I guess we've made up our minds. Ah well, more family holidays for us :)

Hi.

I have recently moved to bromley from Durham. I am debating between, Farrington, Babington and Breaside. Can anyone give me any insight as to which school is better? My little girl will be going into year 2.

My kid went to Breaside and she liked the school. Since it's not an thru-train school, every kid is prepared for the 11+ and/or entrance tests. The headmistress and teachers are supportive. I am particularly impressed that the headmistress was at the school entrance to greet the kids and parents every morning and every afternoon. She welcomed all the questions regarding choosing schools and was willing to give advice to parents. The only downside is the campus is small but it does make good sure of Bromley Cricket Club which is about 5-10mins walk from the campus.

How are they prepared? What year group, what days and which specific school do they prepare for during school hours? As I suspect it would be difficult to prepare for the wide range of schools on their leavers destination between 8.30am-3pm/school hours? It's the privately paid tutors and parents that prepare their children for these exams from year 4 (at least). As no parent will sit back and watch their child fail. Especially after paying those school fees.

Those parents who believe these claims and wait for the school to save their child, are the ones that fail the 11 plus and have no option but to go to their nearest state secondary.
