Any y4/5 teachers out there?

Hi,

My son is in y4 currently and I am a bit concerned about his writing. Any of the writing I have seen of his from school and his reading comprehension homework is full of simple spelling errors and hardly any punctuation. He can correct the errors when prompted but never seems to remember capital letters/full stops etc at the time.

He says that at school no one looks at his writing and he just gives it in and it comes back marked but with no real feedback. I don’t know how true that is but parents’ evening wasn’t that helpful and I get the impression that they are focussing on the children who are really behind due to Covid.

Any ideas of things we can do at home to get him ready for y5? If it was maths it would be easy because I would know what extra practice to give but writing is harder. I don’t want to be too pushy but know that it is really important to get the basics right.

Just keep providing real writing opportunities e.g. letters, cards, instructions, diary. Encourage regular reading through and checking. Ask to look through his work books and ask what feedback looks like for him in writing. Share your concerns with teacher. Lots of spelling games online. Practice spelling the yr3/4 national curriculum words and then the yr5 / 6 national curriculum words.
