Waiting lists for September 2022 Reception

The deadline to accept or decline my daughter's allocated primary school place was Wednesday 04/05/22 @ 23.59...when can you realistically expect to hear from the LA if your child has been offered a place from the waiting list?

It really doesn't matter, but you must accept the offered place or you will end up in a worse position. Accepting the place does not stop your ability to appeal to any other school, even if you didn't initially preference them, but be aware that Infant class size appeals are very difficult to win.
I'd accept the place offered and then ask the admissions team which schools have spaces and apply to them.

LIZS · 06/05/2022 22:42

If she has been allocated a place there are you still hoping for a place at another school? Many schools do not require any formal acceptance.

glitterfairy88 · 08/05/2022 08:12

We had to accept our school place with the school by completing the admissions form. I queried the LA and I was told that completing the form and sending it back to the school and their acknowledgement was confirmation of the place secured.

I've accepted the place at our second choice which we are happy with, but she is #1 on the waiting list for first choice and I was wondering if I should've heard yet whether she has been given a place at first choice or whether it takes some time for the LA to sort all the replies first?

It might not happen for ages if at all.
i know a few kids that got into our school around september 1st, about 2 days before term started.
I also know some that got a place half way through reception year

SheWoreYellow · 08/05/2022 08:44

Just to second that there can be movement until just before school starts. We had friends who were given a place mid August.
Good luck.

GummyNut · 09/05/2022 09:43

@Haylie515b I am in the same boat, so also interested to hear. We accepted our second choice school but am no. 1 on the first choice school waiting list. I have heard (from the grapevine only) that the LA needs to process appeals first? This could mean no movement until July/ August (if any).

APurpleSquirrel · 09/05/2022 09:50

I was talking to our headmistress last week about how many new reception starters there were (pta want to buy them all book bags) & she said the appeals process would be complete by end of this week so we'd have a definite number soon. Maybe each LEA is different?
However, obviously movement can still happen as peoples circumstances change. When DD started reception, one young lad left a few months into the term as he'd finally got a place at the school nearest him rather than our village primary which was a bit of walk for his mum who couldn't drive.

Haylie515b · 09/05/2022 10:06

We have a good grounds for appeal (won't go into detail again as I've already had help from Mumsnet users) but the appeals deadline is 18/05 so I was hoping she may get a place before that from the waiting list so we didn't have to go through appeals. I'll email the LA (again!)

I'm prepared to be corrected here but I don't believe this is the case. Places can't be 'reserved' for people potentially winning appeals- if a place becomes available (whenever that may be) my understanding is that it should be offered to the next person on the waiting list at that time. Appeals are an entirely separate process.

Haylie515b · 09/05/2022 12:15

That was my understanding too.

I've been told all 45 places for first choice have been accepted so we will be going down the appeals route.

That being said, we are happy with second choice so if we lose the appeal I won't lose any sleep. We are appealing on principle really as we believe the LA have acted unreasonably.

I still wouldn't give up hope on the waiting list route @Haylie515b- people could have accepted but decide to give up the place later on for all sorts of reasons (moving, get a place at another school they prefer, keeping it open as well as a private school place and they decide to go private, etc). Best of luck Smile

Oh that's interesting! Fingers crossed then.

Congratulations! We were also offered a place a few weeks ago. Really happy.
