Accelerated Star Reading

My daughter is in Year 4 and have been told she scored 950 points in the Accelerated Reading scheme, but have no clue what it means. Does this correlate to her comprehension skills and if so what kind of level is she on? I'd appreciate any input as I'm new to this. Thank you!

My kids primary school use it but are not given anything other than their book level (zpd).
This means they can pick books accessible to their reading age from their library. I asked for ds's reading age separately so I could make sure he was on track as the zpd is just random numbers eg 3.1-4.6
At my school we give the pupils their book level (zpd) and reading age but Im not sure what the points would correlate to. Its a bit useless on its own I think...
The star reading test gives a reading age based on reading and reading comprehension.

Thank you. Wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction as to how to find out her reading age? I know it's best to ask the teacher but would prefer to do my own research if possible.

The children accrue points for doing the AR quizzes, so you could accrue a lot of points for doing a lot of quizzes accurately etc. The assessments give you a ZPD (as above) and a reading age. I’ve never used the points for any indication of reading standard for children in my class but it is more than possible I have been doing it wrong as we’ve only been using it for the past year 😀

Thanks for responding, forgot to say it was STAR reading (computerised version)which gave the Scaled Score of 950!

DD's school used to have AR a few years ago.

From what I can remember, they do the Star test first to check their comprehension. The questions get easier or harder depending on whether they get the questions right or wrong. It then calculates the reading age based on that.

The zpd is based on the US school system and corresponds to their school years/grades. So a zpd of 2.0 - 3.0 is the equivalent to 2nd Grade, so around ages 7-8yrs.

The results of the star test were never given to us in actual points though - just the age. She should be given a zpd which should give you an idea of the level. The number should also be on the book itself.

@colourpurple I couldn't find anything on Google so ended up just asking the teacher for his actual reading age, failing that I was just goin to ask our own school librarian but didn't need to as his teacher was happy to tell me.
Can you ring or email if you don't want a conversation in front of others/children?

DD’s school uses accelerated reader, and we get told her zpd and reading age, not the scaled score. If you Google ‘Accelerated reader scaled score’ there’s a few resources that explains what it means and they suggest you should have been given a report that shows the scale.

That is an amazing score. Your child is performing at a teenager level. Amazing.

Seriously, your child is at an exceptional level. Are you considering SPGS for her?

Thanks @pkim123. I didn't even know what SPGS stood for so I had to google! We're not based in London so unfortunately not😫

Reading with interest, what’s SPGS?
My year 3 does the accelerated reader score and we’ve been given a reading age of 13.9. Not sure what points that corresponds to though.

Ah ok. We’re not in London either.

@ReadyToMoveIt I think 13.9 is roughly Year 9 (Grade 8) so somewhere in the 800's I believe? Does your school give your child Year 9 level stuff to read? Must be challenging to find an age appropriate material at their reading age. Mine gets given Year 4 reading level so I didn't expect her comprehension to be so high. She does choose her own books at home but nowhere near that level, although she does also read University textbooks for fun...!

She’s basically given free choice of book so picks from the year 6 reading area. She’s currently half way through series 3 of the Warrior Cats series which she loves.

colourpurple · 27/04/2022 17:16

Never heard of Warrior Cats but reviews look great so I've added it onto her reading list :) Mine's currently reading the Neverending Story and loving it.

No I hadn’t heard of them either… she brought the first one home from school but then someone else had taken the second one home when she was ready for it so I bought them for her. There are 6 series, 6 books a series so it’s keeping her going 😂

colourpurple · 27/04/2022 17:19

The books would definitely keep them busy for sure! Thanks for the recommendation.
