Do kids use pencils in reception? I've seen a staedlar one which says first pencil and is chunky and wondering is this the sort they will use in reception? If yes I might buy it for him to practice

Here's a pic

They use all different types of pencils.

Any practice is worth while

We have pencils like that in reception and regular thinner ones, and various pencil grips that we can use if children need them.

It's a good idea to get him using a writing pencil at home, but coloured pencils and pens and everything else that you can draw with are all equally as valuable.

What I'm trying to say is they won't still be using crayons etc in reception classrooms?

They’ll use an array of writing implements. Crayons, felt tips, coloured pencils, etc but they’ll have pencils like that too.

eddiemairswife · 16/04/2022 16:09

What does he draw with at home?

forevertired12 · 16/04/2022 17:37

At home he uses crayola felt tips

He uses the bic ones not crayola

The advantage of the chunky ones is that they are easier for young learners to hold in a proper tripod pencil grip than normal pencils.
No harm in getting one and trying it with him.

@EducatingArti that's what I'm
Thinking

What do you think they are doing in reception? Sitting & writing all day? The EYFS curriculum is a largely play based curriculum. They’ll be writing & drawing in pencil, felt tips, crayons .. of a variety of sizes! They’ll do focused writing activities & lots of choosing to draw, colour & play with a variety of activities & toys.

Just get them practicing drawing & writing. Strengthen their hands & on their grip & fine motor skills! Doesn’t matter what you use, no need to buy expensive pencils etc. Get a selection of crayons, pencils etc .. so long as they are giving it a go, all good!

I also got this as well to help my DS ... he loved writing in it

DS starts Reception in the summer and as part of his school equipment he needs to have some pencils. I got him these ones.

I'll also get different felt tips, crayons and watercolours for him to take. We've got some at home but they are all mixed up. Grin

Don't take lots of equipment to reception class. It will just get lost.
Keep them at home.

School should provide a pencil.

Dizzyhedgehog · 17/04/2022 02:25

DS has an equipment list of stuff to take. He also has two pencil cases for all the various things. No, it won't get lost. Everything is labelled with his name.

We are abroad and children bring their own stuff here. I work in Year 1 at the same school and haven't had to give a pencil to a child in about 2 years. They've got their own things and are responsible for making sure they are kept in the right place and looked after.

Thanks for all the advice

Our school doesn't expect anything to be provided by the family. At home you can work on holding the pencil and mark making.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 17/04/2022 09:02

They did most of the letter formation practice using a small whiteboard and whiteboard marker in DDs school, she came home every day covered in black smudges 😁

Dizzyhedgehog · 17/04/2022 11:27

The really thick pencils and whiteboard pens aren't usually encouraged because they aren't as good in helping children develop the tripod grip. You should have a variety of writing implements available.
