Assessments scores. Zero context given. Any insights?!

My yr2 son had parents evening last week where I was told in maths he had smashed it with a score of 45, and in reading he had got 32, but they had given the test back as they knew he could do better.
I've no idea what context these figures are out of though. I've emailed the teacher but not had a reply yet, and they weren't there at pick up today. Can anyone enlighten me?!

What tests? I’ve had Y2 parents evening too and nothing like that has been done so maybe it’s just your school?

I've a yr2 dd and I've no idea. Are they Sat's practice? Didn't think the tests were until May.

Either way, it's great that he has a strength in maths Smile

did you not ask at the time?

To be honest, what you actually need to know is that he lived up to their expectations in maths but dropped (quite possibly significantly) in reading. Did they tell you anything you could be doing to support his reading at home? Is it the decoding or the understanding he has trouble with?

Y2 teacher here. It could be a whole range of assessments, different schools use different publishers. I wouldn’t think twice about it if they’ve said they’re happy with his score.

Maths could be out of 60 (maybe two papers at 30 marks each) and reading out of 45. But without knowing which assessments were used it's impossible to say exactly what the numbers are out of really. Best to wait for the school to reply.

But yes, if the teacher isn't concerned then you shouldn't be.

He doesn't have any trouble with reading. He's a whizz kid at all things reading and comprehension! He just isn't great at writing and I have a tutor to help him in that bit. His teacher said just to work on big writes.
Last yr he was exceeding in every area other than writing.
No idea what tests were used. No I didn't ask as she just carried on telling me stuff, hard to get a word in on a 5 min appointment!

In real KS1 SATs, the maths papers are out of 60 and the reading is out of 40 so maybe it's a past paper they've taken? All according to the levels data from this site.

As others have said, it could be a CGP, Letts, Exam Ninja, Collins, White Rose etc etc paper so who knows for sure?

We actually got asked "do you understand standardised scores" when given our kids' results - teacher did look pretty shocked when I did to be fair but I work with them a lot! Was actually really nice to have the data rather than just vague descriptions so I know that one child is just a squeak off expected rather than miles away etc.

If these marks are past papers, then he's achieved expected standard in both. He needs to get around 36 in reading and 53 in maths to be at 'greater depth'. My boy has just scored similar on the 2019 paper and I'm hoping with a few more weeks push that he will get to 'greater depth' in at least maths.
