Don't worry too much
Do some fun activities to strengthen his hands/ fine motor skills
Play doh, sewing cards ,using tweezers to move small objects between containers, tracing over lines you make on paper with finger...chalk etc,'drawing in wet sand, painting.

Agree, nothing to worry about - was going to suggest everything Lulu said.

DS is 6 and has only just got to grips with it. He can write out the entire dictionary using pipe cleaners, socks or anything bendy, but God forbid you gave him a pencil. I bought him some jumbo crayons and colouring books, let him get used to just holding them and scribbling for fun. After that he moved onto using the crayons to 'write' on the carpet, and now happily writes the alphabet and sums on paper Smile it's a way from where he 'should' be at his age but a long way from where he was even 3 months ago.

When I taught reception I had the full range of pen-holding abilities, from clear writing using a tripod grip to just making circles and lines with a fist hold.

They generally all get to a legible style in their own time.

Mine couldn't hold a pen/pencil properly when she started school, despite my best efforts. All sorted within a few weeks of starting.

All the above. Also bear in mind that the bones in the wrist aren't fully developed until about 7 and boys usually develop later than girls.
