Help maths! Are your dc learning standard AND metric measurements?

Reason I'm asking is I supplement my dd's maths (school here in Germany - everything metric) with maths books written in English. These are American and teach both metric and standard measurements.

Are these still relevant outside the US? For example, the book deals with cm/metres but also inches, feet, yards, miles. They measure volume in cup, pints, quarts, gallons. For weight the book uses ounces, pounds etc.

There are questions there like "How many ounces are there in a pound?" (I'm old enough to know so it isn't a big deal for me to teach it).

Is this still taught in the UK though or should I be skipping this chapter and sticking to metrics?

Metric only taught here although ds(9) is aware there were feet and inches. Can't you get UK based textbooks ? dc's school uses Heinemann

Thanks LIZ, you knew that's what I wanted to hear, didn't you?

Yes, I could order UK published maths books over the internet. I like these American ones because dd actually ENJOYS doing them and she loathes maths on the whole so I'm glad we discovered these. They appeal to her the way they're set up, the pictures, activities and so on. Lots of riddles to solve, jokes and things. She is so keen to find the answer to a riddle, (Why was Cinderella such a bad basketball player?) she doesn't really notice she is solving 2 pages of subtractions to get the answer (because she had a pumpkin for a coach) IYSWIM. This seems to be my dd's sense of humour.

Doesn't sound very clear does it?! OK so I'll just skip the older measurements.

mine are only taught metric, not imperial. Suits me fine (being German, I never did find out how many ounces are in a pound or how many pounds in a stone)

Thanks everyone! That's interesting with year 6 belgo. OK so I think I'll do inches as well as cm/metres. I have to admit I still think of height in feet rather than metres myself actually...

I'll skip the rest until some later date if it crops up, like you say cat with recipe books. Don't think I'll bother too much with it now (she's 7) and I'm probably just being lazy!

In year 6 they are supposed to know roughly how many pounds in a kilo and the conversion between miles and kilometres but not in any serious way. Can't say I've ever seen a SATS question on this either. It's more awareness that there are different ways to measure.

Thanks SJ
