We are currently looking at primary schools in our area, it is not looking good so far.

This is one of our options we were considering can anybody give me an idea if these results are good or not, I have a feeling not

here

Many thanks

well I hate these tables because they're 90% bullshit

what did you think of the school when you went round?

I would say the CVA is not great .. this is not a percentage .. it should be over 100 .. this is the only attempt at qualitative

it is a small cohort of children (28) only of which 32% (9) have SEN .. who knows what kind of SEN (could be physical / mental .. minor or severe) .. you see SATs results are skewed if you have one child who is mentally disadvantaged say for example a child with developmental delay who might be working at the level of a year 1 and taking year 6 tests .. their results will bring down the scores

really you need to see the schools to decide .. and see what their plans are .. and whether you have faith in them

HTH

i dont think you should stress too much over tables, they are very subjective.
far better to see the school 'in action' and get a 'gut feeling' about what you think of it

ibroughtcake · 04/01/2008 23:02

We haven't been round yet, but the website looked ok. Well compared to the other schools on our list that don't even have one

We will have to go and look around and speak with the ht I think, I know it has a bad rep but then so do the other 3 schools near us

do you know anyone who has DC there? ask to see their most recent ofsted report, far more use to you than league tables.

gigglewitch · 04/01/2008 23:06

i am writing gobbledeegook
the two statements were not related... parents of DC there might be able to tell you what they think of school

and separately, ofted report is useful to see what the schools performance is like

Have a look at

www.ofsted.gov.uk/portal/site/Internet/menuitem.7c7b38b14d870c7bb1890a01637046a0/?event=g etReport&urn=114823&inspectionNumber=290046&providerCategoryID=4096&fileName=\school\114\s511482 320070302.xml

I don't think from the OFSTED report it looks that bad. Usually if OFSTED say a school is good, it is good.

I don't think you can judge a school by a set of statistics. A lot depends on catchment area. You really have to go on gut feeling.

I WOULD NOT TRUST OFSTED REPORTS ON SCHOOL AGAIN THE PRMARY SCHOOL WE USED WAS SUPPOSED TO BE GOOD
I had a child who left in year six hardly able to read most seemed to have their paprs readto them in their sats but ofsted think its a good school Hardly able to read at 11 and level 7 in science at 14 having not even reached level one at age 7
And which secondary schools do ofsted think are good around here the ones that push the most pupils on btechs so it looks like more pupils are getting more gcses but these are marked by the teachers Ofsted is a gov organisation so if the gov wants to close schools along with selling of post offices and hospitals they use their inspectors Or if the gov want to try some social enineering they help to close schools.
it is better to talk to parents and pupils and look at schools your self

Ofsted make sweeping statements based on short observations of people under stres .So the best actors do well

My concern with this school based on the results is not the most recent set of results itself, which may be skewed as Twiglett points out, by a small cohort taking the test that includes quite a high percentage of SEN children. The worry I would have is that on the four-year comparison chart results have been going down every year, and that sort of downward trend needs to be addressed by identifying the problems and putting measures in place to remedy them. If I were a parent visiting the school that is what I would be asked the headteacher about. A head worth his or her salt should be able to tell you about weaknesses in the school and how s/he plans to address them without becoming defensive or bluffing.

AbbeyA · 09/01/2008 13:07

I wouldn't even look at league tables-they don't tell you anything about the school. Look at the Ofsted report, but the most important thing is to visit the school and see if your child would be happy there and fit in.See all classes-talk to the staff and especially the Head-ask questions.

Clary · 11/01/2008 01:28

I broughtcake I agree with twig.
32% is a high ratio with SEN which could/would skew figures. Yes, value added is not great but the rest of it is all bolleaux anyway imho.

Go an dlook round, talk to other parents, watch the kids going in or coming out - how do they behave? Do they look keen to go in?

That sort of thing is much more helpful than a bunch of stats which only show how good the cohort was that year (and 28 is very small).

Eton is bottom of the league tables because the goverment does not recognise tougher alternatives DAILY MAIL JAN 10 O8 .but schools pushing easier alternatives equal well performing school. dont they
Its not easy to find schools allowing the pupils to take seperate science gcses anymore in case the pupils find the science gcses too hard and it lowers the school in the league tables.
Just in case pupils did find a school which does the three a solution has been found if the pupils dont do two or three is it these schools cant count it in the league tables so like eton these schools are lower than they should be in the tables.

THE LEAGUE TABLES SEEM USELESS JUST A MEANS PERHAPS OF CLOSING MORE SCHOOLS and lowering standards .HOW MANY Btech pupils in science are later becoming doctors or even doing a levels in science.
MY CHILD WOULD HAVE LIKED THE OPPORTUNITY TO JUST TAKE BIOLOGY AND HAVING BEEN FOUND TO HAVE A SPECIFIC LEARNING DIFFICULTY finally by the start of year 6 it wold have been much better than the double science which this school does .It is sad that children are having their choices made for them in schools heading for the top of the tables .Its also sad that pupils in some schools are not allowed to do gcse science unless they get a level 7 at age 14 but are made instead to do alternatve science courses which the gov allows the school to claim are worth three is it gcses
