How old would you say this child was based on handwriting?

To make it clear, this is my child. He wrote this spontaneously at home, I just found it. School work and homework tends to be a bit better but with all the same issues coming up. I'm meeting his teacher later today. Thanks.

What are you hoping to gain from asking that?

I hope your meeting goes well with the teacher.

ClutterofStarlings · 01/03/2022 09:42

8? That’s based on my dd who is 6 and spells similarly but has much worse writing! He’s drawn himself some pretty good lines to write on.

DropYourSword · 01/03/2022 09:45

My DS is 5.5 and incomprehensible with his writing pretty much. I could read exactly what he meant to convey in this and looks pretty decent letter formation so I'd guess a few years older than my son!
I think it's sweet he wrote this unprompted.

Thanks. I guess I know his writing is below standard, but I find it difficult to get the teacher to give me a straightforward answer as to how far below he is. I should probably worry less about it perhaps.

I’m loathed to say an age because it looks like he was writing the lyrics to an Encanto song… if he was doing that while listening to the song I can imagine he was rushing.

bluebunnyblue · 01/03/2022 09:46

I would guess year 1...I have DDs in year 2 and reception and this falls between their writing and spelling standards. Having said that I've seen enough of their peers' writing to know that there is a huge range of abilities in each class. There are kids in my elder daughter's year 2 class who write like this, and also kids in reception who write like this! Sorry, probably not very helpful....!

You could have warned us about the earworm!

Thanks. I don't think he was listening to it at the time but he seems to have it constantly on loop in his head, he's always singing it. His writing when he writes something 'original' is pretty similar to this though.

I'm guessing 5/6, year 1 at school.

No that's helpful, thank you

To answer your question (while the song goes round in my head again ffs!) it's probably slightly neater and better spaced than my Year 2 dd's writing. Letters nice and even. I take it you're worried about the letter mirroring? I would think by late Year 2 that they would be growing out of that. If he's in Reception or is a young Year 1 then it's very good.

BeaAggressiv · 01/03/2022 09:50

I would say 6.

Karatema · 01/03/2022 09:51

My 30 odd year old has appalling handwriting so learnt to touch type at 11 because very few of his teachers could read his writing. Hé has 2 first class degrees so stop worrying and, perhaps, suggest he has a dyslexia assessment.
Good luck with your meeting.

lemongreentea · 01/03/2022 09:51

5 or 6 based on my nephews handwriting

Blossomandbee · 01/03/2022 09:51

I would also guess about 5 or 6, year 1/2 age.

Catrice · 01/03/2022 09:51

I would guess about 8.

MistletoeMeadow · 01/03/2022 09:52

It’s hard to say because there is such a wide range of abilities in each group, particularly KS1, post the covid related school closures. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was Y2 work or Reception work, to be honest. I’m not sure that’s a very helpful response though, sorry!

I know you asked about writing, but to illustrate my point I’m aware of Y2 children still not reading at the Reception expected level, and also children in Reception who are reading independently. It just varies so much.

Forgetaboutme · 01/03/2022 09:53

I would guess about 7? The handwriting itself is roughly the same as my 9 year old but I guessed 7 because of the spelling. No matter what age though its good that hes writing for fun and that should be encouraged because the more he associates writing with fun the more confident he will get and you will see improvements

DorotheaHomeAlone · 01/03/2022 09:54

I would say 6. He’s between my two kids who are 5 and 7 and no sign of the dreaded cursive yet! Either doing well for Y1 or slightly behind in Y2?

ABitBesotted · 01/03/2022 09:54

Bless him. I know many Year 6s who aren't quite there yet. It's good he is practising in his spare time.

girlmom21 · 01/03/2022 09:55

I'd say 6 based on my reception books I found the other day with similar writing

Russell19 · 01/03/2022 09:55

I'd be asking the teacher why the school aren't teaching correct letter formation.... every letter is formed incorrectly. That isn't your child's fault, that should have been taught over and over and corrected in reception.

KylieCharlene · 01/03/2022 09:55

My DD's writing looked like that when she was 5years old.
My DS's writing was like that when he was 10years old ( he's 12 now and it's not much better).

Gregsprinkles · 01/03/2022 09:56

I'd say 5, maybe 6
