Recommendations for a encyclopaedia/reference book

ds (9) has had a quiz to do this holiday. While he seems to have lots of reference and factual books he has struggled to find specific answers in several categories(things like inventors, proverbs, composers). I'm trying to encourage him to use books rather than internet for task such as this. Can anyone recommend a decent concise encyclopaedia or similar for this age group.

lol an encyclopaedia ! Will have a look for those. We seem to have Usborne books coming out of our ears yet nothing all encompassing (unless ds missed it of course !)

If you have a TK Maxx near you it may be worth looking, we got dd some really nice encaeclopdieas and natural history books for Christmas and very reasonable.

Try the library?

Library is a lovely idea but would have to take dd and be prepared to spend a whole day there if ds is to finish his answers . Sadly he isn't the quickest of children with these things.

Would spending a day at the library be a problem? Perhaps you and him could choose some books and bring them home.
