PIRA and PUMA scores

My DS’s teacher says that he did well in his PIRA and PUMA. His standardised scores were 125 and 127 respectively. It was a rushed conversation, and he seemed at assume that I would know what he was talking about. I know that are reading and maths, can anyone explain more and put the scoring in context for me please?

They are age standardised scores. 100 is average, 70 low, over 130 very high. So for your child, based on their age (in years and months), they are very high attainment. They are curriculum matched and taken each term, with a different test each term.

@Takeachance18 thank you. That makes it clearer. Is there a maximum score, or does that depend on the age of the child taking the tests? Interesting that it is curriculum based.

Top end is usually around 146 for standardised scores.

You are lucky. I have 3 DC who did these tests 3x a year through primary and I was ever once told any of their results.

Excellent results on those tests. The highest mark is ‘greater than 130’. The standardised score could be age standardised or just
converted to a standardised score. Age standardised is more likely. For example a child born in September and a child born in April could both score 20 out of 30 on the test. The child born in April will have a higher age standardised score because they have an age disadvantage.

@Gocatgo yeah, I was reading about the age standardised scoring. I'm in two minds about it really...my ds is young in his year, but it has not been a disadvantage to him as he had good concentration skills as a young child. Therefore, in his case, I wonder if age related scoring may weigh things in his favour more than it should.
Regardless, I am delighted he has done well and that he is very happy at school.
