Hi - haven't been on Mumsnet for ages!
My ds1 is going sit a entrance test for a private primary (going in mid year, year 4)and I am going to do a bit of practice for the test with him.

I don't want to overkill it, just get him used to the kind of thing he might be faced with. He hasn't come into contact with non verbal reasoning tests at all so far and the only ones I can find are the 11+ practice tests. So I wondered if anyone could point me to practice tests suitable for 8 year olds (he'll be 9 in Feb). Thanks...

Highly recommend Bond's , also at Waterstones and Smiths. They have a website with samples on - www.assessmentpapers.co.uk/downloads.htm

Hi Pastarito,

My ds is starting at a private prep school after Christmas and did a maths paper, English paper and non VR paper last October, he is also 8 and will be 9 in May.

My son was previously educated in a state primary and the prep school were well aware that my son had probably never come across any non VR papers before. They told me to not worry to much about the non VR paper (and to tell him the same) We decided to not tutor/practice in any way and although the results of his non VR paper were lower than expected for his age, the school did take into account his lack of knowledge on how to do them and his maths and English papers he did incredibly well in. His reading score for English came out at 4 years above his age, so they could see that he was perfectly capable.

We have been following the Maths/English bond papers for over a year now so do highly recommend them. We didnt do them for him to get into the school, but as a back up for when he is 11 to get into a private senior school, however he has been bullied terribly at his state school and we decided that enough was enough and looked to move him out now.

I wish your son lots of luck in his exams, dont fret too much and Im sure he will do brilliantly and the school will take into account that he has not come across non VR tests before.

CGM xxxx

I would definitely do a couple of NVR tests with him: the first time you look at them it really is very peculiar and disconcerting. If you do two just tests with him, he will (IMO) score miles better in the actual test on the day.

I haven't found free samples on the net for 8 yr-olds, but I would just pop to WHS and get the appropriate Bond papers for him to have a go.

Hi! Thanks for the advice, I'll look into the Bond papers.
I did a couple of sample test things online with my ds and it does take a few goes to get into the discipline of reading the qs correctly etc. My ds also has no experience of NVR and I do believe you can improve a bit on those with practice.
Thanks again!

I'm going to order these this morning from Amazon. For a nearly 7 yr old sitting an assessment for yr 3 do I want the 6-7 papers or the 7-8?

Agree that the Bond books are good. Ds2 has just been assessed for entry to Year 5 at a Prep school and they definitely took into account that he had been at a state primary.

Chamomile - I would look at age 6-7 first.
