Please no teacher bashing I'm not strong enough at the moment.

What am I doing wrong? I seem to have so much planning to do for next half term and I'm sure there must be a quicker way. I work in a job share in a mixed year group class. It's a small school so we're the only year 5/6. I have three kids of my own, (7, 5 and 3). I plan maths and job share does English. Then foundation is split between us. I seem to spend so long planning it is getting ridiculous. Does anyone use things like Twinkl? Or Hamilton? I know some like them and some don't but I can't keep inventing the wheel so to speak. I'm not new to teaching (15years) but this is getting silly now. Im not sure if it is my school or just me. How to full timers do it? Generally I have no idea how you manage a life and plan?

What's really annoyed me is my friend complaining about the overtime he's needing to do and it's less than I'm doing and he gets £60k! My annoyance isn't with him complaining but with the pay discrepancy. If I was working full time my pay wouldn't come close.

I used to teach mixed age classes... before I quit permanent teaching and moved to supply!

I found Hamilton Trust to be pretty decent for most things. They do mixed age planning for maths certainly (and maybe English, can't remember), and for the other subjects, I just rotated between the different year groups if that makes sense? eg: Year 4 science one term, Year 3 science the next term. And then adjusting up or down if required.

I also occasionally used Jane Considine units for English, or sometimes paid for other pre-made units. I remember paying for a lovely English unit on the book 'The Egyptian Cinderella', that my 3/4 class just loved, and did really good work with.

I also had a Twinkl subscription that I got virtually all of my other resources from. It's a bit "sparkly-er" in terms of resources than Hamilton Trust, so I'd get the planning from HT, then resource it from Twinkl.

I paid for these subscriptions with my own money. School never helped. To me, it was worth the cost in time saved.

Is there such thing as a ‘Year X/Y teachers’ Facebook group? Not a teacher (Careers Lead) and recently discovered such a group and, I kid you not, the ideas and resources on there have transformed my work!!

Personally I can't believe that accountants use things like SAGE software, I mean why don't they just use a calculator or even an abacus. It's like they're not dedicated to the profession or something.

What about people using computers? Unreasonable. Much better to handwrite everything.

This is a thread by a teacher for teachers, you don't know anything about it. If you want to make this comment, it needs another thread.[/quote]
Quite. My mum was an accountant and used to do triple entry book keeping by hand without any kind of a calculator. None of this software business.

"I am a parent not a teacher, but I want to ask, do all teachers use online resources such as Twinkl…" no twirly52 not all teachers use resources such as Twinkl and I'd certainly argue that worksheets are inappropriate for nursery children. For our younger children learning should first be 'concrete' using objects they can touch and experience.

@Newnamemsz Thank you for your positive simple and honest reply.
A lot of these people think I have hurt them by stating what I felt.

@twirly52
From all the posts, of course you agreed with the only one that agreed with you. Your first post was rude and goady (and irrelevant to the OP).

twirly52 · 03/01/2022 00:39

@friedeggandsauce my child does have time to play, your not understanding what I am asking. I am NOT bashing the OP either, I did mention I wanted to ask a question.
I am also new to the site, which is why I asked directly here, sorry if you got irritated by my comment.

twirly52 · 03/01/2022 00:48

@Hercisback it was not directed to the OP, I did not tag the OP although it was their thread but I am new to this site too. It was purely me questioning why it is used.

Hercisback · 03/01/2022 00:51

You were rude about all teachers with this line:

Teachers were dedicated in the past, they loved teaching and planning lessons…

New to the site or not, there's no excuse for that.

If you'd asked why a nursery uses worksheets and explained the type of sheets you got, then you may have had more sensible answers. My child did some sheets in nursery, mostly drawing line type activities and colouring. I don't really see the problem with that.

OP - PlanBee is really good as a starting point for foundation subjects. It has useful planning, and PowerPoints, and is also reasonably priced. Would recommend.
