Hi!
Looking for some help!
My DS1 is in year 3. He does well in math, loves reading, but his handwriting is poor, to the point the neither me or his teacher can read at times. School is giving some support but I don’t feel he is making any progress!
Should I get him a private tutor? I had a quick look online and they seem very pricey! Any indications/ experiences on similar issue??

Many many thanks

How are his fine motor skills in other areas (e.g. using scissors) and his gross motor skills? How is his pencil grip? Can he write neatly for an incentive or is it just not possible for him yet?

Hi,
His fine motor skills are not great, but sometimes he does write neatly!

Hello

Tell us more OP. Perhaps see if you can find some cheap handwriting workbooks. A tutor in English may also be a good idea.

There are handwriting courses (many online these days) - these might be a better bet than a tutor. You could try asking the school Senco for suggestions as they probably see lots of kids with handwriting issues.

I’ve been teaching/rectifying handwriting issues for a long time. Very hard to change after Year 4 and can often be due to incorrect initial learning/ teaching of joins. Have to go back to basics but 1:1 teaching is best so you can see where children are going wrong from the very beginning. That’s why it’s hard teaching handwriting in a big class; you literally need to be standing behind each child to see where and when they are going wrong with joins. If no neurodiverse issues ( dysgraphia, dyslexia) then, IMHO, a :1:1 tutor is worth their weight in gold as they will know best approach. Online programmes can’t see where your child is going wrong!
