...she was sitting behind 2 rows of other children, directly behind the microphones where a row of children with speaking parts stood. so we basically couldnt see her at all.

i knew she was only in the chorus, but i was rather hoping to see more than a very fleeting glimpse of her face as she sang her little heart out

many children sat in elevated positions, so their parents had a lovely view. i know that you cant please everyone all of the time, but i'm so disappointed.

i kind of feel like i missed the performance altogether.

she's only in year 1. the same 15 children had speaking parts throughout the performance. the other 105 children in her year group just sat there singing

Welcome to the world of school concerts!

If you reckon on about 20 concerts in Primary school, only expect your child to have a speaking part in 10, a major part in 0/1, a visible part in 15 and 'where were they?' in about 5

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 17/12/2007 17:11

And you can guarantee the one you have to miss unavoidably is they one they star in..

kittylouise · 17/12/2007 17:12

You wait until you get the school photographs where your little one looks all of a state!

It is disappointing, I know, but you will (eventually) go a school concert where you will be able to see/hear your child. Eventually.

TodayToday · 17/12/2007 17:14

I had the same thing last week. I did enjoy the concert overall though and I had seen DD singing in the Harvest Festival if I craned my neck around a pillar. Really, it's best to go in with low expectations and later on lie to your DD that yes, you could see her and didn't she look wonderful.

ggirlsbells · 17/12/2007 17:15

ah well that's life

you'll still have to tell her she was fab and you saw her the WHOLE time.

there will be loads more ,loads worse and loads better

PussinWellies · 18/12/2007 09:52

...and of course, in the one that they do have a speaking part, you rtoddler will announce loudly 'Need a POO mummy' just before their big entrance, and you will have to assure them later that you heard the whole thing from the Ladies!

Ah, yes: my small DD was barely visible to the naked eye in her nativity play (but she knew I was there, and gave me a huge beam when she saw me).

She also had her hair done up in a "comedy hair style" the day of the school photos.

DS was Joseph and is right in the centre of the official photo, so it all evens out a bit.

EniDeepMidwinter · 18/12/2007 10:21

lol

ours appear to be 'streamed' in receptionfor the school play - ie if you get a speaking part then you are guaranteed one throughout your school life

dd1 has been reprieved from 'no lines' obscurity by being in the choir finally in yr 3

dd2 (reception) gets 5 lines as the star (this is not going to help my nagging worry that the other reception mums think I am teacher's pet) so she is more or less a shoe-in as narrator or lead comedy part for the next 6 years

tortoiseSHELL · 18/12/2007 10:25

I had to miss ds1 and dd in the school carol service last night, as had my own concert, but was v sad as they were both singing in the Key Stage 1 choir. sad And apparently it was VERY sweet!

tortoiseSHELL · 18/12/2007 10:25

that should have been - not a link to sad!

EniDeepMidwinter · 18/12/2007 10:29

torty I bet they sounded so lovely

I am pathetically excited abuot dd1 as teacher says she has good singing voice - am desperate for at least one child to be musical despite being totally non musical myself

sandyballs · 18/12/2007 10:31

Ahh, bless her. It is disappointing but it won't be like that every year.

DD has hers tomorrow (Year 2) and she has a speaking part. I was just thinking how much she has changed in the last two years. In reception she was asked to read two words (all kids had a speaking part), and she burst into tears. Now she can't wait to speak several lines.

GooseyLoosey · 18/12/2007 10:34

Ds was on the front row for his and I was on the front row in the audience, I thought "how lovely".

I spent much of the performance telling ds "shh" as he tried to talk to me and was treated to a great view of him lifting up his shirt to scratch his chicken pox scabs. Howeever the best moment came towards the end when he was really bored and he unzipped his trousers, stuck his hand in and spent the last 10 mins happily exploring his willy. I wish he had been several rows back!!!

tortoiseSHELL · 18/12/2007 10:37

dh said they were very good enid!

for your dd1's singing!

tortoiseSHELL · 18/12/2007 10:38

GooseyLoosey - that reminds me of when ds1 was Joseph at church - he did it 2 years running and last year was better, but the previous year he picked his nose throughout the dress rehearsal. I told him over lunch how good he was, but to try and remember not to pick his nose. All went well until the end of the play when Joseph announced to his mother 'AND I REMEMBERED NOT TO PICK MY NOSE'.

My dd's is today!

The play is entitled "The Sleepy Sheperd"

My dd is the sleepy sheperd... my tummy is in knots!

wrappingpaperBOwZZAndribbons · 18/12/2007 10:43

Just before we all went to school for yesterday's evening performance, DH said to DS " and what do you have to remember not to do?".

DS recites: "not play with my willy, not pick my nose, not pick my fingers" - longer than his actual line.

sandyballs · 18/12/2007 11:52

Ahhhh, my DDs did the sleepy shepherd in reception, so so lovely. There are an awful lot of 's's in the songs and they all had lisps, if I remember correctly .

Earlybird · 18/12/2007 12:04

Yes, as a tall girl dd is usually relegated to top row, in the shadows. We once even had her partially obscured by a scenery scaffold.

Last year, I asked the teacher if dd could possibly be placed somewhere nearer the front/a bit more visible. The teacher looked at my like I was out of my mind.

SelfishMrsClaus · 18/12/2007 15:09

Aw Sandyballs, it was lovely!!

Thank goodness I was recording it, as my eyes were leaking too much to see it properly!!

Xywhisty · 18/12/2007 19:49

Couldn't see my DD at all last night. This year they decided to do the carol service in the church. We sat in one of the choir pews and dd was behind the lecturn.

SantasElasticKnickers · 18/12/2007 19:57

my dd then 4 cried when i was in front row, right next to her, i took her photo, she toldthe teaacher and hadto be moved!
