8 year old is a very reluctant writer

My son, who soon turns 8, is unfortunately a very reluctant writer. He is capable reader. We learn a new word each day and he usually understands all of the words when reading his books.
However, he is very reluctant / lazy writer. He will write the least possible, a paragraph for his homework when he should be writing 2 or 3 paragraphs. He will continue to use a limit vocab in his writing unless i am there with him encouraging him to think and expand his vocab.

Any ideas how I can get him to write or be more willing to but more effort in. He is generally good with his school work but its the writing aspect that seems to put him off.

I would start by talking to his teacher about how you can best support him at home. Ask what strategies they use in school, so you can mirror these at home, and get examples. Would the teacher accept one good paragraph to start with, then build up?

I feel your pain - my Y7 is a reluctant writer too, so I worry about how he's going to get on with essay-based subjects.

Mine was like this! I would ask him if he’s comfortable holding a pen / pencil? Mine was called slow and lazy aged 7 - turned out he needed occupational therapy, comfortable pencil grips, sloped desk etc

Has made a huge difference!

Writing needs to be split up into two different activities:

  1. Writing by hand to practice handwriting

  2. Using a word processor programme to practice writing grammatically correct
