If your child did something very impressive, of their own accord, would you take it in to show the teacher, or would you then appear to be the totally demented uber-pushy mother from hell?

dd2 is in reception and she decided to make a book today. Stapled together 10 sheets of paper, did a drawing on each page and wrote something with it - so that it became a whole story. It's very basic, but I'm so pleased with her because so far she refused to do any writing at all. Would you want the teacher to see this or am I losing the plot?

I would let her show it to the teacher.

howtheBOOKTHIEFstolechristmas · 14/12/2007 21:05

I think the teacher would be delighted to see it, especially if she's been having trouble with writing at school. It'd be helpful to see what she was capable of doing at home wouldn't it?

Bink · 14/12/2007 21:06

Yes yes yes.
(Caveat: slightly depends on teacher.)
But if I (as a teacher) had a child who was developing a reputation for refusing to write, I would be so delighted to see this - because it would mean (a) that at some level all my efforts were bearing fruit and (b) new ideas about how to encourage.

Bink · 14/12/2007 21:08

(The caveat in my post below depends on - is teacher nice, or dragon?)

Smithagain · 14/12/2007 21:08

I probably wouldn't take it in. But I might well suggest to DD that she wanted to take it in herself, for show and tell

lovecamping · 14/12/2007 21:08

dd's school have 'show and tell' which can be a pain if she hasnt decided beforehand what she wants to take and its a mad scamble in the morning, but she loves it!! maybe u could suggest this to the teacher...

mollythetortoise · 14/12/2007 21:08

does your daughter's class do a weekly "show and tell"? She could bring this in to show class. Sounds fab by the way, could you wrap it up and give it to someone (e.g dh) for christmas. Make a fuss and make her feel very proud of doing it, might encourage more "books".

emkana · 14/12/2007 21:51

Thanks everyone.

Yes the teacher is quite nice, but not very effusive IYSWIM, so I'm feeling a bit shy about it. Probably will get dd2 to show it to her herself, but am then worried that dd2 will lose it/destroy it, because she has tendencies to be a bit careless with her stuff.

And it really is great, even though it's a Kipper (ORT) story...

My DS did some writing by himself where he had managed to spell the words by himself. He said he wanted to show his teacher so i put it in his book bag and told the teacher that he wanted to show her. She said it was really good and good to see things like this.

I would love to see it if she were in my class, and I know our Reception teacher would too.

yes yes let her take it in
dd really struggles to write and one week after geting her 4 words home, she wrote them out, again and again and again until she got it right
It was still very basic writing compared to her peers, but she was so proud and infact typing this has made me cry thinking of her effort and sense of achievement
All she wanted to do was show her teacher.
she has been seriously ill with tonsilitis and dehydration since, but it sits on our fridge ready for monday when hopefully she can return.

tis a gorgeous effort and any good reception teacher would embrace it and make it a really positive thing for you dd
Bless here, what a great thing to do!

Clary · 15/12/2007 22:18

My daughter loves to draw in the evenings she is now in class 1 but is not 6yrs old until June next year.
She brought in her "portfolio" to show and tell and the teacher loved it and at least it is bringing out her artistic side.

My ds has written a couple of books - one last year (yr1) about a fire in a fire station and one this year (yr2) about a lifeboat rescue. They were both entirely his own idea. He tok them both in to show and tell, and they were well received by his teachers. I think it's great that they can do this sort of thing, it has encouraged my ds to write far more than the stuff they do in school (which is not always the kind of thing he is interested in).
