Hello,

Can someome provide some feedback on Merchant Taylor Prep? Can any parents with children there shed share some info?

DS has an offer to start there and we need to make a decision soon. Whilst there is a lot of info on the senior school. Cant find much on the prep school?

DS1 went to MTP but went to a different secondary and DS2 goes to St Martin’s. DS1 has always been quite gifted academically but also was in a few sports teams. DS2 is also above average academically.

MTP was fine for DS1 but we chose not to send DS2 there as we didn’t think it would have suited him. DS1 said for those that weren’t so academically inclined that it was struggle.

DS2 loves STM and we would have loved to have moved DS1 but it’s never easy changing schools. Overall we found MTP okay and I know what others are saying, and I don’t disagree with a lot of the comments but it was fine for us. There are better schools in the area. Completely recommend STM! Also some people recommend St John’s but not personal experience here.

DS has been at MTP since nursery, and though I know that others in his year have had grumbles, we have had a very positive experience and if I had to make the choice again, I'd do the same. He is more academic (avid reader, likes maths) with some SEN (with which they've been very supportive) and is not very sporty and so it suits him.

I did originally wonder about applying to St Martin's too but a couple of things put me off - both were issues with wraparound care and my job's start time, neither of which would be an issue in today's weird world.

One comment he made the other week was fairly telling though - he said if he'd had the capacity to know he'd be at the prep for 10y before moving, he'd maybe have wanted to change in the middle as he thinks the 'big school' move is a lot to cope with, especially if friends leave after Y6 for other places. But that would be the case for any of the nursery to Y8 preps.

I should also say I think they've been very good with all the lockdown learning too.

Hi @wondermom2019 what did you decide?

Jazzy8 · 11/12/2021 22:27

My son is at there since nursery and I am very happy with Merchant Taylors Prep.

We have always found it very nurturing and the boys all seem to get on really well together.

The teaching is excellent so standards are high due to this.

Boys get to do lots of music, art, sports and a big variety of clubs.
@rebcartw563 thanks very much. Really insightful.

You mentioned about expectation to stay and i also read the same in the website but nothing in the contract says that we cant move.
So what happens if someone wants to move out? Do they intervene and not provide good recommendations/report etc?
No personal experience of this but have heard that, at least for other preps, there are conversations that go on between some of the schools off the record. We know of one person a couple of years ago who had issues with the school and not sure exactly what went on but they found the whole thing really stressful.

@rebcartw563 would you have a view on st martins vs York House please
