Not sure how to tackle scary teacher

My son is in year one. His teacher is an older lady who has been at the school for donkeys years, She is very loud and eccentric.
At first I thought this was a plus - but now I am quite horrified. She shouts all of the time. She says things like "are you studpid? hurry up" and bellows at the kids. I help out in the class occasionally so have first hand experience. She had a go at a little girl for doing a "ridiculas" picture because she has done a picture of a blue dog. She made her do the picture again.

She makes me a nervous wreck so god knows how my son copes. She is not from the school of positive praise - and is very much a name and shame.

She had a go at my son the other day because his monster picture he was doing didnt have shoulders! she made him do the picture 3 times.

Anyway it was my sons christmas carol concert today. Half way through one of the song she stopped the concert and shouted at the children for singing the words wrog and told them to concerntrate and stop looking at their parents, she then made them start again!

when they got back to the class room she told the class off and shouted at them - she pointed at my son and said "especially you". now i was there and can say he behaved well throughout!

what the hell can I do? She has been there so long - what if I complain? will she make my sons life difficult? I am a bit of a softy - so am not sure what to do.
Thanks for listening!

Complain complain complain complain.
Sounds terrible.

your child does not need this in y1.
talk honestly to the head (who is more than likely aware of the pwoblem) and ask if there an option to change classes. I woudl hate for ds to be taught by someone like that.
shame she can't take early retirement...

I dontt think actually complaining works - tend to get peoples backs up. I would go to the head as a 'concerned mother'.

BeeWiseMen · 13/12/2007 21:28

First, check you haven;t accidentally enrolled your son in a Victorian Classroom Re-enactment.

Second, complain.

Straight to Ofsted. Evil witch needs sacking. Small children are vulnerable. They need their self esteem bolstering.

Sorry - am a little forthright tonight

She sounds completely barking. No way on earth should she behave like this with small children in her care.
I'm not sure why, but the fact that she does this in front of parents (including you) seems hugely shocking. She has evidently not got a clue that what she is doing has the potential to really scare the children she is supposed to be helping to learn.
OUt of interest, what do the children think of her? Only ask because at my local school one of the two reception teachers is less well-liked than the other because parents think she is too shouty. Whereas the children all seem to think she is brilliant.

...is she a bit deaf maybe?

When she doesn't shout and shame, what is she like? Does she ever make them laugh? I Have often seen teachers get away with a lot if they make the kids laugh sometimes... (I am a teacher...)

I don't think in THIS centuary we should have to tolerate teachers like that. Talk to the head.
