8+ (2021 exam) Reserve list and SPJ offers

Hi, we've just done the 8+ at King's and I'd like to know when SPJ have their 8+ exam and make their offers please?
We've only got a very small chance of passing but just in case we are on the reserve list, I'd like to be able to tell DS how much he'd have to wait to find out. I imagine there might be movement until September? but the biggest move would happen after SPJ make their offers.
Thanks for your help Smile

St. Paul 8+ Exam will take place on the beginning of spring term - Jan. By the end of Jan you will find out the result. About the moving of reserving list, it could be caring on untill March which should be same week of WUS. KCS finishes exam earlier than both other schools, so they deadline is also earlier. Last year St. Paul exam was moved from Jan to March and had to made decision after exam in a week while KCS deadline for excepting the offer due to the end of Jan. Some boys paid the deposits for KCS and WUS but still participated for St. Paul exam and took the offer from them. But it would not very much different because the number intake is not much 16-20 boys.

Thank you very much @Kitkatbat that's very helpful. And thank you for explaining what happened last year. Very interesting. I just wanted to make sure I have realistic information for DS in case he's on the reserve list. Now we have to wait for the results.

Hi there,

Are there other families who went to the 8+ exam at Kings College. From the info I gathered, the exam was particularly different from other years and quite difficult. I know that the bar is quite hight but it seems like this time they used the surprise factor to balance the over tutored kids with the rest.
Also I had the impression that there were many many kids, but I believe that we are not allowed to know how many candidates apply for it.

Any parents out there that are now also waiting for the results or parents that went through this same process last year and have any advice?

Thank you,
K.

Hi @laren,
I've always been told that the listening task is fairly unpredictable (so you can't truly be tutored for it yes) and the reasoning as well.
For the listening it's a mix of things. Usually there is an element of dictation (and that did come up this year, write down sentences, and yes, the level is high in the sense that the recording is fast, there's very little time to actually write before the next sentence comes up). DS said there was also what sounded like comprehension questions ie the speaker said something and then the children had to answer a question or two about what had just been said. Sometimes they throw in some maths or directions in there as well.
For reasoning, there's no standard format at King's. They put in any question they want. It can be verbal, non verbal, or a mixture of both. You can't know.
For maths DS said that it was 100 marks to gain. That was the same as last year for the 7+.
And English was a comprehension and then a writing.
My understanding is that the "pass mark" can vary considerably every year, depending on the cohort. Some years an overall 70% might be fine, other years not. It all depends on how well (or bad) everyone does.

On the number of candidates for the 8+ this year, it might be somewhere between 250 and 300. DS said they were 9 in his group. There were 30 groups I think.
Only 14 places on offer Confused
