Reception child - struggling with reading?

My son is 4, he’s my third child with, the older two are teenagers and I don’t recall them struggling however DS seems to be. His first 3 reading books have all had the words “tap” and “pat” he knows all his letters and sounds, he will sound each word out however get them mixed up when he says it afterwards. So he would say “t-a-p, pat!” and vice versa. He is very good at hearing the sounds that words begin with and will go around the house telling me what letter objects begin with. He has got so fed up with the tap and pat books that it is making him not want to read at all 😩 He’s very bright and his vocabulary is amazing, I’m at a bit of a loss!

His teacher has sent a different book now with just a letter on each page and about 4 different words at the back. We have bought magnetic letters to try and build words with him but are struggling to find a time in the evening where we can get him to focus, he just wants to play or watch tv after being at school all day.

My older children have always had a higher reading ability than their age. However their dad is dyslexic so maybe he could be dyslexic?

Any tips/reassurance would be great!

I think it's difficult to tell at this age.

Practice his listening skills and making pure sounds in case those skills aren't embedded. Speak clearly to him.

I used the reading eggs program which helped but that was a few years ago so might not be the thing at the moment.

It's still very early. As long as he is picking up the sounds then eventually he will get used to putting them in the right order.

This is very normal at this age. The most important thing is not to force things and make him associate reading with stress and pressure! I say this as a teacher specialising in literacy difficulties.

Mine does similar, and most other parents report their children doing it too in their class (also reception). I got a little concerned until the others said their children do it too, must be developmental at this stage

Completely normal, try the Teach Your Monster to Read app and play around with letters. Don't stress too much, he's had less nursery and a weird 18mnths, but this is still totally normal.

Thank you! We’ve got the teach your monster to read app and he plays on that happily. I work full time and my mum takes him to and from school so I don’t know any of the parents to talk about it with x

It’s still very very early days OP ....in my GD school it’s year 1 where teachers start to offer interventions for children who are struggling with reading
