Parents evenings and updates

In my child's school they do a parents evening 6 weeks in to the first term of a new school year/new teacher. This tends to be really simple and they are settling ok/they aren't kind of level. Then we have absolutely nothing until the end of the school year another parents evening and then in the final month a school report which seems far too late to act on any issues. Do all schools do this?

Schools have a responsibility to produce one written report on each child per year and then offer at least one opportunity per year for parents to "discuss pupil progress". Most schools choose to do two parents' evenings and one report so what you've described is pretty standard.

There are schools that do more though. My school, for example, produces a shorter written report but does it once per term so parents get three across the year. We run two parents' evenings, one in autumn and one in the spring, with optional meetings after the written report in the summer.

Remember, you are free to request a meeting to discuss any specific issues at any point in the year. If you have something you wish to address, speak with the teacher.

Our primary has 3 parents' evenings a year - one each term. The last one is right at the end of term to discuss their end of year reports, and this year for the first time they said we only needed to book an appointment if we wanted to discuss anything the the report.

One Autumn, one Spring parents' evening, plus the end of year report.

That's quite enough for me. Two late nights for teachers per term, plus the time they spend writing reports- I wouldn't want to add to that for the sake of a 10 minute meeting when I know if any issues arise during the term I can contact them, or they contact me.

Schools must legally produce at least one formal pupil performance report each school year. Most do a combination of performance reports and parents evenings however as I think that most parents find that way easier. Remember you can always beg or more politely ask for a meeting to discuss any concerns privately. Or you can email or phone the school to request a appointment to speak to the teacher face to face as well. Good luck. You can talk about the reports at parents night.

The report you receive in the final month is your child's end of year report. It's done at the end of the year.

Ours has two parents evenings a year - one in November and the other just before the Easter holiday.

We also get a mini-report at Christmas and Easter to show progress made. In July we get a longer report with comments from the teacher. We're also told that we can make an appointment to speak to the teacher if we have any concerns.

I think they get the balance about right. We usually hear about any issues when they arise, so there aren't any unpleasant surprises in the reports.

We had parents evening in October & we have another in early April. Report in July. Seems OK.

If there was an issue that needed to be acted on, you would have been told sooner. Parent’s evening is generally just a nice reassuring chat, which no significant information given.

DS has SEN, and I get told about problems on a weekly basis. Parent’s evening is still a uneventful chat about his nice quality's.

I assume if there’s an issue they would be in touch more regularly
