Would anyone know what kind of scissors are given to the kids at 4+ assessments. Blue ones or pink ones (pictures attached)

I would imagine it depends on what sort of scissors the school has. Every school I've ever been in has the pink sort, but I've never been in the sort of school that has a 4+ assessment.
(Do schools reject kids on their ability to use scissors? I despair.)

It doesn’t matter- if they can use one type they’ll be fine with any type child scissors. Try not to overthink this.

Oh dear. I sense too much angst here over a simple task. It's a very young child. Some won't be able to master scissors at all. No hope if the child is left handed

CakesOfVersailles · 28/10/2021 02:27

Probably the second type (pink) but I would not worry too much about the scissors or cutting exercises.

It really should not matter. As long as your child can use scissors correctly either one one of these will be fine

I ordered the these scissors www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07ZDP3H37/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?psc=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&ie=UTF8
but they seem way too big for my 2.5 yo DS. He struggles to open them with thumb and index finger.
I have read in Montessori system children are taught to use scissors from 18 months.
I came across this article www.howwemontessori.com/how-we-montessori/2020/07/best-scissors-for-montessori-toddlers.html
where the first scissors look quite small. Unfortunately, I could not find where to buy them.

Lily7050 · 01/11/2021 10:03

Ok, I found site that delivers Montessori toddler www.montessoridesignbynuccia.co.uk/product/scissors/
They seem quite expensive but I ordered anyway to see if they are of any use to my DS.

@Lily7050 you honestly don't need special scissors for younger children. Regular children's scissors (like pink ones in OP) are more than adequate. We had the pack from IKEA from before kids and both my children started using them at just under 2 with supervision. When they start, it will be getting used to how they feel, then figuring out how they cut and then making snips. After a while, they will start to use them properly

With hindsight, I can see the other thing that helped with the action are the playdoh scissors. They used to love cutting a playdoh sausage up from a very young age so that helped with their familiarity with a scissor. No blade with that one too so I was a lot less concerned about cutting themselves

Honestly don't overthink it, follow their lead

I will agree with most of the comments here. Just let them use scissors and over time they learn it. However if it is of any use the blue ones in picture really helped my child learn quickly. Helped ease their fear of using scissors as the grasp was easier. It is still a one person opinion but stating just in case it helps.

Since posting I have tired and my child has been able to use pink ones just as well so maybe I was overthinking

It's best to try and not get into a situation where your child has a fear of scissors by exposing them to ordinary scissors.

I made pumpkin soup today with an EYFS class full of four year olds where they chopped vegetables with knives. It was clear that some had experience of cutting things up, even if it is just their own food on their own plate, whereas others could hardly believe they were going to be in charge of a knife! Many could peel a potato with a peeler.
