My 7yr old son has recently started a assessment school due to behaviour probs and on going application for ehcp. During a recent meeting I was informed that my son's learning was that of a year 1 child instead of a year 3 child. This has literally made me I'll. How is it that my son has been able to fall two years behind and I wasn't made aware by he's original school and how can I help him catch up

I'd be asking the school how you can help as it will be very specific to him

As part of the EHCNA DS should have various assessments including from an EP, and you can request other assessments such as SALT and OT. These should highlight what support DS needs and how school and you can help him.

Did you not have meetings with DS's previous school and reports/paperwork from them?

You might get more answers if you ask MNHQ to move your thread to the SN boards.

It is quite important to factor in that the last two years of schooling have been very disrupted.
Even when schools have generally been in, there have been lots of isolation periods. Then individuals in each class have all missed different bits. A LOT of children all round the country, will be a long way from where they would otherwise have been.
Plus, - nothing to do with COVID - most teachers have to differentiate their teaching across several levels of ability all the time. It is possible that, without COVID, your son was struggling anyway.
As to how you don't know - have you been to parents' evenings ? What was said then ?

If he has behavioural issues it’s quite likely that this has stopped him from making the necessary progress. You must have been made aware of this for him to have been given a different school placement. Behaviour can be a massive barrier to learning.
