New KS2 league tables are out.

We are quietly smug.

Hmmm?
in our area (Oxfordshire) ? the top 5 ranked schools (on aggregate scores) had a total of 86 pupils between them eligible for KS2 SATS of which 4 had special educational needs.
The bottom ranked 5 schools had a total of 152 pupils taking KS2 SATS of which 70 had special educational needs.
The top 10 ranked schools had a total of 238 pupils, 20 with SEN.
The bottom 10 ranked schools had 332 pupils of which 140 had SEN.
SATS are a threshold test ? measuring the % of pupils who pass a given threshold. The SEN label covers many diverse children and many will be capable of exceeding the threshold by a long way ? but even if the mean score in the SEN group and the not-SEN group was the same ? you would expect the distribution of SATS scores to be wider in the SEN group and therefore a larger percentage of these would not reach the threshold.
So no SEN children tends to give better results on the league table ? but does it necessarily indicate better teaching, or a better school?

The top ranked primary school in London is my local. It is a faith school and I am "of the faith", but in a cultural rather than enthusiastic way. Can you imagine how many zealous Catholics with small children there are at the local Church? > It has a more arcane admissions policy than most Oxbridge colleges.

We decided early on that we did not stand a hope in buggery of getting in: the phrase round us is "pray or pay".

FAWKEOFFwiththetinsel · 06/12/2007 13:45

DDs school in no 9 ranked in the best of the best

OrmIrian · 06/12/2007 13:51

Now that is interesting. The school that Ofsted marked as outstanding in our area has the same average results as our school more or less. But lower in science. How odd.

SlightlyMadScreachingSirens · 06/12/2007 13:59

Happy with that given that we have a high SEN ratio (as lots of people round here pick and chose other local primarys).

What I don't understand is that the 100% one is lower than our LEA & national average yet all of hte others are above LEA and national averages .

brandnewhelsy · 06/12/2007 14:06

OK - 99.3 CVA, 31.3 average points per pupil and 300 aggregate score. Does that mean it's a good school? Really - it was top in the county for average and aggregate score but quite low down for CVA. Anyone know what that really means?

Posey · 06/12/2007 17:15

Ours didn't do fab, but tis a really brill school. League tables are only a part of the story aren't they. Interesting though, still like to compare with other local schools

janinlondon · 07/12/2007 11:36

Ormirian the best of the best are ranked according to their level 5 achievement - the normal rankings are only level 4.

seeker · 07/12/2007 11:44

You really have to look behind the figures though. For example, our school didn't do brilliantly, BUT it is the catchment school for a huge and disadvantaged estate. A lot of children come in to the school well behind where they should be in terms of speech and social development. In the light of this, the results are really good - the school adds lots of value and is a happy, calm, purposeful place. In contrast, the nearest other school is a village school and there are very few children actually in the village. So most of the pupils are driven or come by bus - indicating parents who are committed and involved in their children's education. The results are excellent - but they are starting from a much higher baseline - so the results SHOULD be good - and they don't add a lot of value. Don't take the figures a face value - there is often a story behind them!

Polgara2 · 07/12/2007 12:02

Very well - top in its area. However, more importantly, the dc love it and so do I!

yaddayule · 07/12/2007 12:04

DS is happy at school I'm happy with the school so I'm not going to look at the results !

CountessDracula · 07/12/2007 12:10

101.4 295 30.7

I think that is good
Her school is third in the borough (which has the best primary schools in the country allegedly)

We are delighted with it

Hulababy · 07/12/2007 12:22

11 of the schools from the city I am in are in the bottom 200 Sheffield really is a city of two halves!

flack · 07/12/2007 16:51

Bit below average in everything. We are nonetheless satisfied.

christywhisty · 07/12/2007 22:50

Ours is just above average but they don't put any pressure on the children. School down the road puts huge amount of pressure and is usually top 10 for the county.
Prefer our schools more laid back approach. DS got really good results this years SATS, so I'm happy.

MissEm · 08/12/2007 00:31

Pretty rubbish 98.9 263 26.3, erm really rubbish.

But...she loves it there and is above average in all her subjects (SATS levels) so obviously it is the best school for her, and I love it there to. They must be doing something right.

sparklygothkat · 08/12/2007 00:36

100.7
28.9
283

flack · 08/12/2007 09:51

That's not rubbish, MissEm, that's about the same as our school, only just below average. Not every school gets a brilliant intake, the parental intake and family social advantages has more to do with the scores than anything else. Our school has almost 37% on the SN register, which surprised me, because it's not obvious when I help out in classes. Still must have a big impact on things like average academic achievement. One of the local village schools got scores all far above average, but then again, only about 7% of their kids taking KS2 SATs are on SN register.

wessexgirl · 08/12/2007 09:54

The school I went to was in both the rubbish lists. Yay me!

The village schools can be very misleading though, I agree. We've one near us that was terrible one year and brilliant the next.

MissEm · 08/12/2007 11:06

I suppose you are right flack there a lot of kids at the school who have English as a second language alhtough they do tend to pick up the language really quickly and I think the SEN rate is around 25%. I am not slating the school for there results it just annoys me that my friends like to point out that my dd school is in the bottom 5 of the borough etc etc.

She is doing so well there that she does year 6 stuff for English now and again, I think they are more peeved that she has achieved so much at a 'poor performing' school. I hate the other school its full of stepford children anyway.

goingfor3christmaspuddings · 08/12/2007 11:11

101.2 31.5 291, very happy with that

Blossomhill · 08/12/2007 11:33

Both of mine were quite low but my children are both exceeding so not really that bothered!

PussinWellies · 10/12/2007 11:48

100.6 261 29.0
But what this doesn't show is that of the 18 children in yr 6, 10 were on the special needs register -- mine included. Five were deemed to need scribes. Since KS1 SATs, six of the brightest had left, to be replaced by five with special needs and just one without.

Pretty good then?

TroutSprout · 10/12/2007 12:13

Very well...as it always does
But not very well for my boy as it happens ..which is where it really counts
