Can anyone suggest any additional maths work at home?

My dc is in P4/Y3 and has been off for two days this week whilst waiting for a PCR result due to a positive case of COVID in the class. The maths work that was sent home to do was ridiculous, 1 more than, 1 less than, 10 more than, 10 less than.

I realise the school might be easing kids back in after a couple of interrupted years of learning but they have been back here for a few weeks now, am I wrong in thinking they should be a bit beyond this sort of work, we seem to have gone back to work we were doing at home near the start of the pandemic. Before the summer holidays we were being given function machines and starting to work towards times tables.

Dc’s school reports always say they’re working at above expected so it’s not that they’re struggling or in a lower ability group. I’m not a pushy parent at all but I know my dc and they will get bored if they’re not being challenged, can anyone shed any light on what they’re similar aged dcs are doing in maths at school or if you use any additional workbooks at all at home? I’m not talking hours of work just an extra exercise to go with their homework to keep them interested.

I’m also concerned that if they keep working at a level behind where they (and I mean the whole class) should be we’re going to come to a point where all the work to catch up will come at once and be too much for them.

We use the CGP books, which I recommend. I now have an idea of what my children struggle with or find easy. 10 mins a day works wonders.

Speak to the teacher if you have concerns about what level of work they are doing. If you start trying to do things at home you may be jumping ahead or teach something in a different way to they learn it as school.

If Scotland maths curriculum us similar to England, I'd go for the CGP stretch naths book for a child working above expectations. Other suppliers exist!

Thanks everyone, I do have an idea of how things are taught at the school, my eldest has just moved on to secondary so have been through it all before but couldn’t remember at what stage they did things at.

I’ll have a look at the Carol Vorderman books and the CGP ones. Thanks.

I use the power maths & CGP daily/weekly books.

My son is in year 3 in a school that uses whiterosemaths and find 1,10, 100 more or less is part of the place value topic for year 3.

If you prefer online something like Urbrainy, doodlelearn or IXL.
