Want to move DS to a more nurturing school

My DS has just begun his GCSE's. He's at a state selective in north London and is very able. He developed an RSI injury during lockdown and the school, particularly the SENCO, have been unbelievably dreadful about accommodating his needs (not excessive, he can type but not write). He feels as if school is just enduring him and has gone from a very happy child to one who dreads going to school. I need to move him to a school in striking distance of north London with a nurturing ethos and a brilliant SENCO. Any suggestions?? Can't really afford private but will fork out if we have to

Can you not just send him with a laptop?

Assume your DS has been seeing medical staff/OT/Physio for the injury? Get them to give you something in writing and send it in to the school.

DD has a laptop for all subjects due to dyslexia and hypermobile fingers. I sent the SENCO a copy of her Ed Psych report before she started Y7 along with an email asking them to note the specific recommendation that she use a laptop and sit at the front of the class, and then sent her on day 1 with a laptop.

Not a squeak out of anyone - and she was sat at the front for every class. She's the only student in her class who uses a laptop so not the norm there either.

What exactly is the school's issue?

Thanks so much. He does have a laptop (school has only just allowed this) but school trying to force him to write in some lessons, despite numerous docs and physio notes. I don't feel we can make it right at this school.

Have you spoken to the HoY or form tutor?

If you have doctors and physio notes then they should be taking those seriously. In what sense have they only just allowed the laptop? If it's recommended by medical professionals then they don't get an option.

If it was DD, I would just say that she should tell the teacher who is trying to take it away that in that case no writing will be done.

Follow any incidents up with an email to tutor/HoY and SENCO stating what happened, attaching copies of medical notes and invite them to call you to discuss.

In terms of other schools - not sure you need one that is more nurturing, just one that employs normal common sense.

Have they actually said what their problem is?
