Year 2 Books

My DD has started Year 2. Has anyone brought any books (CGP/Collins, etc) for aiding in home learning? The school gave some syllabus in year 1 but nothing this year. So no idea what to teach at home except reading or doing some mathletics.

I have a lot of experience teaching in Year 2, I don’t know about the books but some key Year 2 skills you can work on with her are:

Phonics if she needs it but just focus on her reading generally if she’s confident
Spelling is a big one for year 2, she doesn’t need to spell everything correctly but she does need to spell phonetically. Also to be able to spell the Year 1 and 2 common exception words (words like because they can’t sound out, you can find lists online)
Writing stamina, encourage any independent writing she does

For Maths knowing her 2, 5 and 10 times tables and her number bonds to 20 are the key skills to focus on to start with.

Thank you Birdkin.

We do comprehension once a week. I've bought one of the comprehension books, DC reads the text to me and then we do the questions together verbally. I picked the Keen Kite one as it seems to be designed to be done verbally with no spaces for writing, and has answers in it but there are loads of others.

I read with him daily and I try and ask questions, but DC is much more cooperative with being asked questions when they are written in a book and it means I know we are covering a broad enough range of texts / question styles). School has sent us loads of info on comprehension, I think because it's one of the SATS papers so I assume it's important.

We read daily, I gave up on the school books though and let her read what she wants.

She also has a few apps to encourage maths and English she does now and again. We do times tables on the walk in every day.

Thank you. Comprehension is one thing that her year one teacher pointed out that needs work on. She can read well, but does not remember what she read. Even after watching TV if I ask her what happened in the movie she would not be able to recall much previously. Now she is getting better in that department at least.
