My dd is 5 yrs and has been doing this for about 6 months. She made finger bleed at school today. Realise it is quite common but wondering what ppl did about it???

My dd (5) does this too, my dh says she has copied it from me . I am trying to stop!! Anyway we try painting on stuff called stop n grow which is for nail biters. It is really foul to taste, we haven't had much success yet. I am hoping it is something she will grow out of. What have you tried with your dd?

Ha! I still do this and I'm 42 .

i do it til fingers bleed. Just looks funny cos she wants plasters on all the time and it can be painful, i think. I haven't tried anything yet. She is having therapy for anxiety which is probably root cause.

My ds bites his nails but not skin till it bleeds, he seems to have picked up my habit.

my ds, 6, bites his nails and I am at the end of my tether with it, it looks so awful and painful, I'm not a nail biter but dh is, so if some one has a solution that works would appriciate it. Have tried bargaining with him, that he can only bite his index finger in the hope that the others will grow/skin can heal but this isn't proving very successful!! think it is anxiety with him too

i do it, it's annoying but a morish habit

LadyOfWassail · 03/12/2007 17:40

I do, I get those sticky uppy bits (never give myself manicures, have to fork out for the works every once in a while instead!) and right now I have torn some skin off and it kills

hippipotami · 03/12/2007 22:26

Dd does this too, and she makes her fingers bleed on an almost daily basis. She also has some nervous tics, and a hair twirling/pulling habit. It is all anxiety related. The GP advised to ignore all of these habits as to draw attention to them will make her more anxious and that will perpetuate the cycle. So that's what we do. Not much help I'm afraid.

get some bitter apple from the vet - it is absolutely horrific to taste and lingers something chronic (much worse than the stop n grow)
