Visiting private primary schools - do fathers wear suits at school tours?

We have booked visits to private primary schools this September-October.
Child's father is wondering whether children's fathers usually wear suits at school tours?

I’m intrigued at your Uber cool dress code @ChnandlerBong what do your children wear when not in jeans/suits??? Chinos are utterly unremarkable.

FfrothiCoffi · 06/09/2021 15:18

I genuinely haven’t seen a child/teen wear chinos for years. It’s either casual jeans, smart jeans or suits. Shorts in the summer obviously.
I work in finance and ‘smart casual’ tends to be a shirt tucked into jeans.

Hoppinggreen · 06/09/2021 15:20

@ChnandlerBong

apologies to the chino brigade - dh is in advertising and his business casual is definitely posh jeans now.

but really are you getting your kids aged over 12 to wear chinos/cords?!

If I insist DS 12 doesn’t wear jeans he wears either a pair of black Hollister chinos or blue Abercrombie ones. DH is the same if he can’t wear jeans
BananaPB · 06/09/2021 15:31

Mine did because he went to work afterwards but there will be al sorts from jeans to work overalls

BananaPB · 06/09/2021 15:32

Sorry just seen it's private.
My dad visited in a suit but that was a long time ago

Florin · 06/09/2021 15:34

Nobody gives a stuff, dear god in lock down one, when shops were closed but school open dh did the school run in 2 different colour deck shoes as in one was brown and one was blue! If you pay the bill they really don’t care. It’s unusual for the headmaster to be in a suit! This is a 20k a year prep school.

Peanutsandchilli · 06/09/2021 15:47

God, no. Jeans and a t-shirt is fine. They're after you being able to pay the fees, not scrutinising what you wear.

MGMidget · 06/09/2021 15:52

No expectations from what I have seen. Some parents will be dressed up, especially if the have come from work or are going straight to work afterwards. Others will wear what they are comfortable in. If in doubt smart casual is a good option. I often dress a bit smarter for school tours, ie not my scruffiest jeans, in case any assessment is being made of the parents as you never really know!

ChnandlerBong · 06/09/2021 16:53

@5zeds not uber cool, just what dh wears to work that's all?

and as or what do my kids wear when not in jeans or suits (snort. kids in suits) - well erm tracksuits? there's never been the need for anything else. navy trousers once for a wedding and a suit (once in his life) for my sister's wedding but that is it. he has literally never worn chinos in his whole 17 years..... Shock

5zeds · 06/09/2021 20:39

@ChnandlerBong most here wear suits to school (or jeans to college) and suits to funerals/weddings/posh parties. Denim is very casual, so to kick around town or “out”,

Do the women wear jeans to your Dhs work too?

viques · 07/09/2021 01:44

Just don’t let him wear a clown suit, it will really make him stand out as that parent and you will never live it down.......

CruCru · 11/09/2021 22:42

You know what? There are some areas where schools are desperate for parents to pick them and there are others where they can be a lot more picky.

It isn't necessary to wear a suit but I would wear something unremarkable. If you can avoid T shirts with "funny" slogans or raggy tracksuit bottoms that would be good (I'm sure your husband wouldn't wear either to a school open day).

Schools want parents who are kind and interested in their children's education. They don't have to be corporate lawyers or bankers, just sensible people who are not going to march into school in fury at the smallest thing.

Lily7050 · 13/09/2021 09:04

Thanks everyone!
I registered with different schools because there was no way to know which school would suit my DS as he was just one year old at the time and schools were closed because of COVID.
It is still difficult to tell which school would suite best as he is just over two years old.
Now I am trying to visit as many schools as possible to get an idea of environment even though things might change by the time we need to make a decision.

Look at where there leavers go

AICM · 13/09/2021 20:32

My sister's school had to ask several dads to pour their cans of larger away before entering.

Jeans is fine.

Rizzoli123 · 13/09/2021 21:14

Mine didn't and I am in a private school. He wore jeans and a shirt. Proper shoes and that was it

Rizzoli123 · 13/09/2021 21:14

😂😂😂

Pixie2015 · 13/09/2021 21:19

No just wear what you would normally wear on a day
