September born child

I’ve read the gov website and I’m confused! I always thought a September born child would start the following September in reception, but from reading tonight- they can either start in January or they start in the September, but go straight into year one?? Is this the case? Can anyone put me right? My little girl is 4 next month so just checking. Thanks Smile

She will start Reception in September 2022. Applications will open soon.

My little girl turns 4 on the 14th sept and she is going into nursery until sept 2022 then will go into reception x

She should start next September - she’ll just be one of the oldest in the reception year.

The January/September straight into Y1 applies if you choose to defer her place.

She must legally be in school by the term after the term she turns 5. In her case, that would be January. So you can choose to send her in September or defer to January (but keep in mind she’d be joining an established reception class and might find it harder to settle)

Your child wouldn’t be able to join straight into Y1 because of when she turns 5 - but a child born later in the year in the Summer term wouldn’t be “legal school age” as early as yours so could defer until the following term, which might be September of Y1.

Thanks! This is what I thought but the gov page I read wasn’t clear at all!

A September born child would start school the month they turn 5. In your daughter's case September 2022 however they aren't compulsory school age until the term after they turn 5 so legally you don't have to send her to school until January 2023 if you wish.

The going into year 1 thing is for summer born children. A child born in say august the month before your daughter isn't compulsory school age until September 2023 so parents have the right to not right them to school until then but they may have to go straight into year 1 rather than reception depending on the school and local authority.

Hope that makes sense.

Sept 2022.
And you timed it right, Sept is the best time for a birthday education-wise in England.

Same as everyone else has said, she will start September 2022.
My son was born on the 5th of September 2015. He started reception last September, his first day was the 4th, the day before his 5th birthday. This year his birthday is obviously this coming Sunday, and his first day in year one is Monday 6th September. So he is literally the oldest in his year.
