Are fountain pens used in (state) primary schools these days? If so, from which year?

Not in my kids schools.
Ds took a fountain pen to school in y9 and had people queuing up for a go.

We have pen licenses in our school, much to the disgust of several parents - and I see their point. So when they get to my y6 class they use pencil for maths and pens for everything else regardless.

No most don't, for the same reason that most adults don't use fountain pens - they have been surpassed by better, less messy technology!!!
However I did get my children the LAMY starter pens for fun and then one of the Neon LAMY's when they were older - but of course they much prefer roller balls for obvious reasons so I use the LAMY's now with fun coloured cartridges.

What sort of technology has surpassed a fountain pen? @Hoopa

I love mine and have yet to find a pen that glides like this.

@RacistAngst
My work involves writing a lot and I have never found anything that surpasses a good quality disposable rollerball. I have a collection of fountain pens, but none of them glide along the page like a roller. I love a fountain pen for letter writing though!

I think that there's some fantastic gel pens around these days. I've not written in anything fancier than the cheap Parker pen I bought my son for a laugh but sadly rarely write these days.

This has given me a flash back to DS-who was on "fountain pen watch" for about 2 years-that's the period in which your prove your readiness for the much coveted pen. I think this was year 3 or 4. It wasn't a state school though.

His feed back from teacher included things like "please wash your hands after break" as the dirt and smudges filled the book.

Fountain pen used here from yr 4 when pen license gained…..Prep school.

Years later, lots who started in this system still use ink pens Lamy or Parker most popular.
