Backpack for 8 year old

Hello anyone bought a backpack for an eight year old recently? DD is so excited about graduating from a book bag to a pencil case and backpack. I work in secondary and everyone has Hype or Fjallraven on the whole. Hype also seem reasonably priced but are they way too big for primary?

Hype bags aren't particularly big ... but depends what you are intending to put in them (if lunch, water bottle, book, homework diary, PE kit, then that's going to pretty much fill it).
Have the school given you any indication? Some have limited storage space.
Are you sure pencil case is needed/wanted? DC's school always said not to bring in your own ones as the much desired smiggle ones tended to go walkabouts

I just bought 2 from lidl that are bloody amazing and a brilliant price ! I got them before and they lasted really well.

My 8 year old has picked a Vans backpack and pencil case. I got it from Surfdome in the sale, it was about £30.

Vanilla underground do some good ones. Had a few from there, very good quality and size

Ooh thanks this seems a touch smaller so might go for this.

She actually does need a pencil case - wasn't on my radar at all for her age but she is over the moon about it!

We've got a smiggle one. It was only £29 with matching water bottle and pencil case.

Smiggle are massively popular at primary. My children were very excited about their dad buying them a new Smiggle bag this year (daughter especially). They do seem hard wearing and some are just ridiculously pretty and cute. They aren't cheap, though!

My son's class (going into Y4) all seemed to have Smiggle or Hype last year.

ForeverInADay · 23/08/2021 09:35

I have a son going into year 4, I had no idea a particular make was a thing at this age! I now recall it was when I was at school. Oops, maybe his massive minecraft one isn't cool...

I was rather hoping it would be a bit longer before brands mattered. He's at a small village school so I'm hoping we have a while! She says as she starts to google smiggle

NeurologicallySpeaking · 23/08/2021 10:01

Haha the good thing about having a parent who works in a school is I do know all about the brands - just don't want to dwarf her!! It shouldn't matter but I was the child whose parents couldn't afford branded anything and felt jealous of those who could so I'm happy to get her one of the more reasonably priced branded ones.

I work at primary and smiggle are everything!

Few in my 9 year old's year had Hype ones. Think DD1's current one is a Sketchers one that looks very Hype-esque and it's a decent size on her.

MeredithGreyishblue · 28/08/2021 21:28

My 2xDS both have Hype at primary. Decent size for them.

Eatenpig · 29/08/2021 10:18

Smiggle bags last at least two years. Very robust

MigAndMog · 03/09/2021 23:08

We also use the smiggle back packs for the kids clothes for a week away - they are large enough to fit everything in for our primary age kids. Their reading book rattles around in the back pack on a school day as they are pretty large.

Stompythedinosaur · 08/09/2021 11:50

My 8yo has a hype bag. I don't find it too big at all. It seems good quality. In our school Smiggle is less popular in the later years.

Hullabaloo31 · 09/09/2021 12:28

Our primary send the smiggle ones home as they're too big and they (the school) don't have a ton of space for bags.

Eatenpig · 10/09/2021 00:02

Our large primary & all our local ones have lockers for kids smiggle are fine. Can coats in.
