Can I boast on here about dd1's progress in reception ? Can't do it in rl !

We feel so proud of her, but due to a few of my close friends having real problems with their dc in school at the moment, I keep stopping myself from telling them about her parents evening consultation. I don't want to seem insensitive basically ! I feel sorry for them, and it would seem very smug and boastful to relay what the teacher said about dd1. But I really want to ! I am so proud of her ! I have not said too much to the mums at school either - if your child is doing really well, it feels really hard to tell people, as if you are really bragging. Am I being silly ?

She is top of class and being sent home with work others aren't ready for, and she puts 100 percent into all she does - THERE I'VE DONE IT ! Boast over.....Phew.

Well done her and well done you

But I think you're right not to make a big song and dance about it in front of the other parents - although I can see how it must be frustrating for you.

congratulations chankins and mini-chankins. Hope you're saving up for those university fees.....

Hee hee - do you ?
Thanks - I think it might rub people up the wrong way if I went on about it. Though with one friend I am pretty sure she would be boasting of it were her child, but I know she would hate it if I relayed what we were told. So I just bite my lip !
The main thing is she knows how proud we are - and the teacher is fantastic with her, and all the others, so we are really lucky.
Its just so nice to hear things like that. It makes this parenting lark all worthwhile ! You know you are doing a good job and can relax a bit !
She is bloody hard work at home though !

chankins, I'm with you there - dd1 is in the same position . Dh and I gush about her (and the others!) all the time, and fortunately I can bend my mum's ear about it all too! But yes, not something to share with classmates' mums .

Bet you have the warm fuzzies though

chankins · 30/11/2007 21:17

Certainly too - it was last week and I am still on cloud nine. Well done to you and your dd too miaouonthebagpipes ! Its nice to boast to close family, as they are just as chuffed aren't they ? But it is a shame you can't tell everyone. Thank goodness for MN !

How do you know she is top of the class and how do you know what work if any other children are being sent home?

In most state schools finding out your child's class position is like getting blood out of a stone.

chankins · 30/11/2007 21:52

Because the teacher told us this. I knew she was doing well, but didn't realise how well. Perhaps the teacher should have phrased it better. We were careful not to tell dd1 the top of class bit, in case she repeated it to other children.

What sort of stuff is she bringing home?

Be delighted in her progress but remember that she should be play play play playing at this age!

chankins · 30/11/2007 22:08

She is allowed to bring two reading books home a night now, (she started doing this in secret without asking teacher !) She is starting to learn the longer sounds such as 'oo' 'ai' 'ar' 'oi' etc. We did some tonight, then she took it off on her own ans started writing some out. She could think of lots of words that had those sounds in. She knows all the words they are meant to know by end of reception so can read most of the early books by herself. Sorry, I sound like I am really bragging, but I was so excited so see her progress, and just the fact that she really loves it, she loves learning anything new and goes off and does it without us telling her too.
Of course seeker - her whole life is play play play, I wouldn't have it any other way. She loves playing with others, (bit bossy though !) but also loves playing little games by herself.
Sorry again, I really do sound big headed, but I had to keep it in all week because two of my closest friends have kids really struggling with school.
Plus I am always on the wine on friday
nights so my tongue is a little looser !

you don't sound big-headed, just proud. Sounds like for your DD learning is play and play is learning. Always nice to have have some evidence that you haven't utterly screwed up the parenthood business too.

More wine for you.

Thanks but I think I've had enough ! Getting a head ache so off to bed x

It's so exciting watching them fly! My ds suddenly "got" reading last term, and I could sit and watch him reading a book for ages. He soemtimes looks up and says "What are you LOOKING at, mum!"
