Hi! I need advise please Wink

(I hate uniforms AngryAngryAngry)

DD1 was in reception last year and we bought the trousers from the uniform shop and they were a mistake.... always falling.....

This year I intend to shop elsewhere. Somewhere cheap and cheerful. Any suggestions? Please let me know your best finds Grin

These things are expensive! DD2 is going into nursery as well.

I need black trousers with white shirt/blouse, blue trousers with white tshirt (short and long sleeve)

Plus shoes ConfusedConfused did I mention I hate uniforms yet?!

Btw school says black trainers for PE. Can it be the same black trainers as the usual days? If not, are plimsoles really bad? Stupid question: are plimsoles like those thin sole trainers or are those kind of weird gym ballerina slippers?

Sainsbury's or Next are my go tos for school uniform.

We're lucky in that DDs uniform is very simple and she's allowed to wear black leggings and a plain white T-shirt with royal blue cardigan or jumper so everything is very comfortable and easy to find.

Sainsbury's for me. Their sweatshirts, cardigans and polos are noticeably better quality than Asda and Tesco.

Asda for slim fit PE joggers. My DD is also tall. Like a PP I couldn’t find any last year other than in H&M. More expensive but good for tall girls.

Sainsburys for elasticated waist skirts and blue shirts. They also do really long vests for tall kids and the quality of their tights is good.

I’m trying to find some black waterproof trainers. All the ones I’ve found seem to be made of material.

If you need slim fitting trousers, Next slim fit is 2 inches smaller rather than the more standard 2 cm. M&S do long leg and extra long leg so you can essentially pick a waist size (by picking a younger age) and then pick a leg length to get a really good fit. Their two pack of trousers are good value and come with hems you can let down if you need extra length part way through the year. Ours lasted very well. I've eyed up Asda slim fit too, I think it might be 4 cm slimmer, but haven't tried. Asda also do slim fit shirts, M&S do much more expensive slim fit ones that are no iron, I'm still working out which of the two to get.

Sainsbury's can be worth a look too depending on how close you are to big stores as you get free click and collect on anything over about £20 to Argos / Sainsbury's local so may save on delivery charges.

asda are great for mid-range price point. the best is marks and spencer's. aldi is also brill xhth aldi great for slim kids as have adjustable waist

DingDongThongs · 31/07/2021 14:37

A separate pair of cheap black trainers will give your child's feet more support.

Plimsolls or pumps are more for PE indoors in the hall. Shoezone.com
for cheap trainers for PE in black.

I just get all my kids uniform from the supermarket. Tesco and asda are our nearest, so I just get what I can from both. They're both the same in terms of quality and price IMO. I buy five of everything because I CBA with midweek washing and ironing. Don't believe people who say you don't need to iron polo shirts either.

I don't know what my kids do to their school trousers, but they are always wearing out the knees. DS1 had a pair on one flaming day and came home with a hole in them!

I feel so silly for buying the trousers last year at the uniform shop Blush looks like there are much better options

These are what we occasionally had to wear for gym at primary school:

DD wore Jersey bootleg trousers from Nursery to year 6.The Next ones linked are more expensive and thicker than similar ones from the supermarket and never seemed to shrink regardless of how many times I tumble dried them. She did have versions from sainsburies when younger but is particularly tall and out grew their range by the time she was in year 4. They were good in the summer though as they were thinner.

Shirt wise I'd recommend the easy wearing ones from M&S they are intended for children with additional needs but I hope by buying them it helps fuel the demand. The shirts come with velcro under the buttons to aid speedy changing. They wash up particularly well too.

DD wears brogues and was forever getting told she got changed too slow as most others had velcro. Once your child can do laces and mastered the skill I recommend silicon laces from amazon (dress ones for school shoes) for school shoes to aid speedy changing.

For school dresses don't bother with white frilly socks, you can buy black ones which will last far longer if your Dd likes to play in the mud as mine did.

I've kitted out 2 primary children 1m & 1F for approx £30 each
My eldest is 15 y o and it used to cost me about £20 to kit him out inc PE stuff from Aldi.

DingDongThongs · 31/07/2021 20:37

Agree with PP white frilly socks are the work of the devil!

Unless you want to spend a fortune on Ace bleach for whites or Vanish powder.

@grey12 - seriously? How? M & S? School insistant on 1 Rip-Off Merchant supplier.

Eldest goes to a small school - his uniform at secondary isn't that eyewatering.

DingDongThongs · 01/08/2021 18:59

I don't blame you for hating uniforms.

My son has to wear a school jumper - £ 20, a school pe top £20, pe shorts £10 and pe jumper -£20. it's not horrendous. My old school mate in my home town informed me she paid £350 for her daughter's school stuff. I'd have balked at that. She's a teeny girl - I'd have found some second hand.

You've posted about this before Hmm

MyDcAreMarvel · 03/08/2021 11:08

Why are you putting your dd in trousers when she could wear a pinafore?

I did?! About what?

Buying uniforms? Maybe last year? And then DH decided to go with uniform shop for the trousers and they were a year long headache so I definitely need better advice Grin

steppemum · 03/08/2021 11:11

Is this for PE or school? There isn’t a single girl in my DD’s pre-school who wears trousers as uniform, they all wear skirts & pinafores with comfy, thick cotton tights- is that an option?

well, you must live in a lovley 1950s bubble Hmm
plenty of girls in trousers round here at all schools.
Have you ever watched areception aged child try to put on thick tights after pe? Nightmare, please don't do that top the teacher
