My friend dd has just started reception and her lo is so tired when she gets in. She cannot be bothered to play with her little brother. She lies and watches TV. seems fine at beginning of week but by wed onwards is knackered. how about your lo's. She was 5 in Oct.

My daughter used to go to sleep at school, after lunch, regularly until yr 2! They got used to it and put her on the couch in the head's room . It's a big transition to go full time for some.

Some dcs just do get exhausted....nothing to worry about IMHO.

My DD used to fall asleep on the carpet in class during afternoon story time, despite a 7pm bedtime. I would say it was quite normal to be completely shattered!

my dd is the same age as friends child and she is up til 9pm every night. Sleeps til 8am the next morning so not too bad.

my daughter starts in January, I do hope she is not too worn out. Bath time will be a nightmare when she is grumpy!

Wisteria · 27/11/2007 18:04

That's very late for 5 isn't it? Or is that just me? My dd goes to bed at 9 and she's ready then (11.7 btw)!

emandjules · 27/11/2007 18:06

i don't think it matters what time they go to bed as long as they have 10-12 hrs sleep at that age. She has 11hrs every night without fail and I get a lie in. I never used to go to bed b4 9.30pm at that age and my work never suffered,

my DS2 is 4yrs and does mornings, he is the oldest in the school nursery class. on half days he is utterly kn@ckered, and by thursday lunchtime he just eats and falls asleep wherever he is face in dinner if not fast enough.
DS1 has got over being knackered but he is in Y2! all my DC are bathed at 6:30 and bed at 7. sounds hideous but they need it. DS1 gets to look at books on his own after joint stories with little brother, which is his treat, being older.

Wisteria · 27/11/2007 18:10

emandjules sorry, I wasn't criticising, I was just genuinely surprised. That's why I asked if it was just me!

Mine used to have at least 13 hours at 5.....

emandjules · 27/11/2007 18:27

Hi wisteria, i didn't think you were criticising.
it works quite well cos both me and dh get to spend quality time with her til 9pm

really bad

Ds1 comes out of the classroom saying he's tired, until he sees his friends running down the road then he seems to forget he's tired and joins them. When he gets home he remembers he's tired and gets really stroppy!

He gets a second wind after tea, and although he's ready for bed at 7, he's often still pottering about in his room until 8.

Jacanne · 27/11/2007 18:46

DD1 is very similar - just stared Reception (was 5 in Nov) but is quite happy to lay on the sofa watching TV or playing on the computer - tbh I am just leaving her to it - I used to need wind down time after work before bed (still do really). By Friday she is ghostly pale with huge shadows under her eyes and if you look at her the wrong way she bursts into tears.

mankyscotslass · 27/11/2007 18:47

Last year in reception DS was really tired by midweek for the first two terms. He would get home shattered, but be overtired and just wind himself up into a frenzy. The only thing we could do was put him in bed earlier, for a while he was going to bed at 6. It meant DH hardly saw him, but helped ds cope. By the end of reception year he was a lot better, and now in year one is going at his normal time of 7.30.
