Our classes are all call by names of authors this year. The last 3 years has been painters and before that it was endangered species. I haven't got a clue anymore which class is which year! When dd was in Polar Bears, her maths group was Iceberg. We used to call her lettuce!

Enid · 27/11/2007 11:46

no they definitely dont

you look at the best work on the wall and then see if your kid is on their table

and work it out that way

tortoiseSHELL · 27/11/2007 11:48

That was how I decoded the groups enid - I knew which were the most precocious children, and took that as the first group, then went from there! And I was right!

AnAngelWithin · 27/11/2007 11:48

nursery have red rockets, blue planets and yellow stars.

reception and year 1 have elephants, caterpillars, monkeys and others i cant remember.

same with year 2.

year 3+ nothing.

They have animals for the class names at our school. So ds is a Newt this year! Dd was an Armadillo last year and a Meercat theyear before!

In my first year of teaching (about 10yrs ago) there was a year4 teacher who had been there so long that she had taught many of the parents.

She called her maths groups; top, middle and bottom. Parents regularly complained and she regularly dismissed their complaints saying that whatever she called them, all children knew 'which' group they were in so she may as well call it as she sees it.

As an NQT I was suitably gobsmacked at this but now I can see that whilst I'd never be so blatant, she was absolutely correct in her reasoning.

LindzDelirium · 27/11/2007 19:59

in reception it was penguins, frogs, ducks, tigers and ladybirds, now in yr 1 there are blackbirds, starlings, robins and sparrows I think.

TheAnticodCod · 27/11/2007 20:02

we haev htose too seeker

ds1 is apanther

Hulababy · 27/11/2007 20:05

This year the tables in DD's class are ducklings, tadpoles and ladybirds. They were ability groups last half term, but mixed ability this half term.

Last year's mixed ability tables were ballerinas, fairies and princesses - it was the reception year of an all girl's school

I know DS has had colours and shapes in the past. Not really sure what we are on now. Clouds, sun, rain etc ring a bell, but not sure if that was this year or last year.

Smithagain · 27/11/2007 21:39

On the first open day I went to, I was shown round by a little girl who was very proud of being in "courgette class". I'm afraid I got an uncontrollable fit of the giggles. All those little courgettes, bobbing around in their (as it happens) green and yellow school uniforms ...

DD1's groups are frustratingly named after the location of their tables, so one cannot deduce any clandestine information from them

LIZS · 27/11/2007 21:46

Ours are animals - bears, tigers and so on. Almost certain dd is on 2nd table .

jennifersofia · 28/11/2007 20:20

Last year I had american animals as my literacy groups, ranked from biggest to smallest, but then felt anxious that it was most unfair to the lowest to be chipmunks so they got to be grizzly bears instead! I do get in a bind about it!

It is all ranked, but has to be clear to teaching staff, but not obvious to children... though sure they have an idea anyway.
