Year 2 - how is your dc doing?

Just wondering because dd is my first child etc. She reads beautifully and as far as I can tell is one of the best readers in her class.

Spelling she seems to have a problem with and although her teacher isn't concerned I just wondered what the general standard is. She knows the basics, but I do mean very basics, although she can read quite long and difficult words.

Also, they are given homework sheets once a week which she really struggles with. She is very bright, has an amazing vocabulary for her age and asks some very intelligent questions. Her maths is also very good. I guess that they just aren't good at everything.

Could anyone give some examples of how well their year 2 dcs can spell.

Thanks

She sounds very similar to my dd. she is one of the best readers in the class - is a fluent reader, and is considered by her teacher to be academically at the top of the class (in all subjects). However, her spelling seems pretty bad (and her handwriting come to that)to me. I am surprised how she spells things given that she can read so well.

But her teacher isn't concerned, and she loves to write, so I think it must be ok.

dd went from 10/10 to 6/10 this week die to her cold and lack of practice I think. These were words with a soft "g" like gingerbreadman. She can correctly spell most common 4 letter words, the majority of the year 2 ones but less competent when writing. She also gets a sheet of literacy or maths once a week but it is pretty simple.

A good reader does not always equal a good speller. Also writing and spelling often come later even to good readers
I wouldn't worry.

DD only gets 6 spellings a week as she really struggles with them and then only gets 2 or 3 correct. Reading has come on leaps and bounds recently but is still below average, writing however is very very neat and joined up beautifully, the joining up has really had a positive effect on getting her letter formation right.

Also has homework sheets weekly, some she finds easy and others if they don't interest her are hard work for all concerned!

An 'average' year 2 child can spell words like, there, their, where, who, then, because, would, could, should, like, these as well as a variety of words that are spelt as they sound e.g. flash bring, clock.
Year 2 is spent working on long vowels e.g. ai/ay as in train/play, ou/ow as in round and down, oo/ue/ew as in food/blue/threw. Children should be able to spell simple words with these letter combinations confidently by the end of the year.
This is VERY general and some children appear to get 'stuck' but then take off again in the next academic year going on to exceed their peers.
