10 year old taught age inappropriate material ....any advice ?

My daughter ( 10 ) attended a two day personal development course organised by her school in order to help prepare them for the move up to secondary school. After the first day, I received an email from the school saying that some parents may have found the content of the course inappropriate, and gave the contact details of the course provider. I didn’t see my daughter until the end of the second day ( she was at her dad’s ). I asked her what they had learnt on the course, she said they told them about a boy who went up to secondary school and started to get bullied relentlessly, in the end he committed suicide. Then their teachers were asked to leave the room ( ? ) and they were told the story of a 15 year old girl who went to a party and was raped.

Apparently four of the children left the room upset, one of whom had a panic attack. My daughter was certainly disturbed by it all. The move up to Secondary School is daunting enough without horror stories.

I read the information e mail before she went and it just said they would be discussing challenging issues, nowhere did it mention suicide and rape. I am really angry that she has been subjected to this and wish to complain.....any advice on how to proceed ? Also ....AIBU ?

This is incredibly....bizarre? I can't see how that 'course' would meet the objective?

The school should surely be arranging a meeting to discuss with parents and massively apologising. I can't get my head around the teachers being asked to leave the room?

What have the school said? How does your dd feel?

I would want to know why on earth the teachers followed the instruction to leave the room as well! That’s ridiculous.

AdjustableAssholeSettings · 27/06/2021 17:25

What was the school playing at, allowing the teachers to leave the room and some unknown material taught to the children? That is a safeguarding issue and I'd be asking questions about their judgement.
What did the email say about the issue?

Why did the teachers leave the room? Who was running this course? That's totally inappropriate. We had a mental health talk including suicide at work and we were all told we could step out at any time if we were feeling uncomfortable and that was a room full or adults!

Hellocatshome · 27/06/2021 17:57

So did the teachers leave the room or not because that email says they didn't?

BirthdayCakeBelly · 27/06/2021 17:57

OP you might want to get @mnhq to delete that image as it has your personal details unredacted.

Suicide and rape?! As preparation for the move to secondary school? What the actual fuck! Angry

The poor bairns will be terrified of moving up now, what awful things to teach them! Surely they should have been talking about things like consent, self image, society's crazy pressure on young adults, social media and how to stay safe? Not rape and suicide FFS!

bitheby · 27/06/2021 18:12

That's not very good redaction. I can read most of that through the top layer.

Hellocatshome · 27/06/2021 18:14

Have you called the number to discuss this, I think it cant be as bad as had been reported by the children if the course provider is willing to give parents her mobile number to discuss it with them.

Hellocatshome · 27/06/2021 18:18

Also have you read the course content on the providers website? I have and it all sounds age appropriate. I appreciate your DD is 10 but some of the children in the group would be nearly 12.

HelloCatshome - I will call tomorrow....was only made aware of the content on Friday evening

OP, the main details are still legible and the school at least is identifiable.

HelloCatshome.....my other daughter is in year nine, and said they are covering the subject of rape in personal development next year.

Have just been contacted by another mum, and she said they were also taught about having their drinks spiked and given special stickers to put over their glass.

In that case to answer your question mu advise would be

  1. email the school to find out if the teachers left the room or not
  2. read the course information on the course providers website
  3. call the course provider to discuss
  4. don't take everything children say as gospel (especially when they get to Secondary school age)
HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 27/06/2021 18:27

Looks like this is the course outline

www.sosglobal.org/workshops/transition/

Honestly it looks like it should be pitched more at age 13 up rather than 10-12

Lougle · 27/06/2021 18:28

I wouldn't be happy with the teachers leaving the room at all. I agree with pp that I know exactly which organisation provided the workshop.

recall · 27/06/2021 18:29

I will check that the teachers were asked to leave the room, ( although it’s not just my daughter saying that ....other children have also told their parents that happened ) I have read the course content and nowhere are the words rape or suicide mentioned. I intend to call the course provider tomorrow
