Reception home visits happening?

Hello,
Just wondering if primary schools are having home visits for entering Reception this year?
Is it a mix of some doing so and some not?
I am aware of one school that is and another that isn't and wondering what is happening generally.
Thanks.

In our area they don’t happen normally anyway. I would doubt they are happening now in the schools that are still doing them.

KatherineOfGaunt · 27/06/2021 11:57

There isn't a "generally". Some will, some won't. Some don't do home visits normally anyway, unless there's a particular need. Other schools visit everyone.

You need to ask your school. This year is particularly tricky.

TrashKitten10 · 27/06/2021 11:58

We've been doing distanced doorstep visits since September. All schools will be different though :)

skausbsk · 27/06/2021 11:59

Ours is visiting

sparklyblue81 · 27/06/2021 12:03

Ours don’t do home visits normally- they visit the children in their nursery/pre-school but not this year. My daughter has at least waved to her new teacher across the playground when collecting her big brother but that’s it 😬 They are doing a video story time & virtual tour of the classroom over the next few weeks but that is it until September x

Thanks.
The school who is doing it is planning to go in the houses. I was surprised.
Thanks for the feedback!

I know someone who had a home visit and yes they came into the house, our school hasn’t mentioned any Plans to visit

DinkyDaisy · 27/06/2021 12:11

Interesting how different schools are approaching it.
Within the rules I guess if keep below 6 people.

Doorstep visits seems a compromise...
Or, Zoom!

My DD’s teacher is going to her nursery. This is what they normally do anyway apparently, not home visits.

My DD has a few trust/anxiety issues with any new adults & I spoke to the school when all the transition stuff was cancelled. They are also accommodating an after school visit for DD to see her classroom & meet her teacher outdoors.

DinkyDaisy · 27/06/2021 13:03

That sounds great Bobholll

Last year my daughters teachers came into my house and wore masks.

DinkyDaisy · 27/06/2021 15:18

Everyone happy with home visits in the house this year? I was just concerned about staff multiple visits to multiple homes in these covid times.

We are planning to do ours in September, if restrictions have been lifted by then.

UnalliterativeGeorge · 27/06/2021 19:36

We usually have home visits but this year we're going into school to meet the teacher/TA and also see the classroom in September before they all start so killing two birds with one stone

DinkyDaisy · 27/06/2021 19:39

Thanks all.
Interesting to hear what schools are doing.

I had mine this week.. at our doorstop. Two of them Smile

User5827372728 · 27/06/2021 19:53

We had a 10 min FaceTime with the class teacher.

DinkyDaisy · 27/06/2021 20:20

Interesting contrasts.
Some on doorsteps, some inside homes, some online, and some postponed. Also, some in school when not risking bubbles.
Maybe school choice or LA guidelines that impact on choice. Also, whether staff feel safe etc.

We are doing a transition day on a SATURDAY so that the children aren't coming into contact with anybody else at the school.

Spacemonkey2016 · 27/06/2021 20:30

My DS had a visit from his new teacher at nursery, they've got two outside stay and plays to meet their classmates and in September, they don't actually start full time until 16th Sept (phased start) so the first couple of days of term when home visits usually happen, everyone will be having an individual 15 minute school visit instead. I'm happy with how they've handled it.

PrincessesRUs · 27/06/2021 20:37

Ours isn't - we've got a visit to the teacher in school in the first week of September instead

AnotherEmma · 27/06/2021 20:39

I am pissed off about this and I don't think it's fair that different schools are doing different things to be honest. I think the department for education and/or local authorities should have provided clearer guidelines in consultation with the teachers' unions. Some children have been able to visit their new schools (mostly only outside but still) and others not at all. Some children are getting nursery visits and others not. Some are getting home visits and others not.

Our school is offering a home visit but my DC is absolutely desperate to see his new school, I've obviously taken him to look at it from outside but it's not the same as going in, seeing the classroom, meeting the teacher and maybe some of the other children. A home visit might help the teacher start getting to know him (and give them an idea of his home life) but it won't help him to picture the place he will be going to in September.

I will stop there because it's pissing me off too much to be eloquent on the subject but I do feel than most 4 year olds lack the mental / emotional capacity to make do with a fucking video tour.

AnotherEmma · 27/06/2021 20:40

Just to clarify our school is not allowing the children to visit in person at all, which is what is pissing me off. Not the home visits! I could take or leave that tbh.

DinkyDaisy · 27/06/2021 21:00

Are you happy AnotherEmma to have staff in your home?
I think I would prefer an outdoor, school visit. Or, maybe a visit to class when current Reception children not in it...
I agree, consistent DFE guidelines would be useful....
